Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community.
How many times have you said "yes" when you actually wanted to say "no"? If you're one of those people who thinks that saying "no" is rude or that you'll disappoint someone, relax, you're not alone. We've been taught that being kind is synonymous with saying "yes" to everything, and that is a deadly trap for mental health and free time.
The truth is that saying "no" doesn't make us a monster. It makes us a person with boundaries and character. And boundaries aren't walls to keep others out; they're doors that you decide when to open. At work, for example, that coworker who always asks you to cover their shift, that boss who gives you tasks that aren't yours, or that client who calls at 10 at night. If you never put a stop to it, you'll end up burned out, resentful, and with the feeling that your life doesn't belong to you. You have to establish healthy boundaries at work and in your personal life.
Why is it so hard for us? Because of fear. Fear that they'll think we're selfish, that they'll exclude us, that we'll lose opportunities. But here's a truth as solid as a temple: whoever gets angry because you set a boundary is precisely the one who benefited from you not having any. It sounds harsh, but that's how it is. Establishing healthy boundaries starts with something as simple as a short phrase: "I can't deal with that right now." No big speeches, no elaborate excuses. The more you justify yourself, the more room you give the other person to negotiate. And watch out, it's not about being rude. You can say "no" with a smile and with empathy: "I understand you're in a hurry, but I won't be able to help you today." There's no attack there, there's clarity.
The same thing happens on a personal level. That friend who calls you every night to tell you about her dramas for two hours, that relative who shows up without warning, that partner who expects you to give up your plans for theirs. If you don't say "no" in time, resentment piles up like dirty dishes in the sink. And one day you explode over any little thing. Boundaries aren't a punishment for the other person; they're a gift to the relationship: they prevent you from becoming a pressure cooker. I always remember a friend in pre-university who, because she was too embarrassed to say no, ended up with three boyfriends at once, a disaster. For a firm "no" when it's needed, nothing happens. The world doesn't end.
It's also key to start small. Say "no" to that coffee you don't want to have, to that meeting that isn't essential, to that plan that makes you lazy. Little by little, you'll see that people don't die, that some complain a bit, and that you gain hours of life. Because time is the only resource that doesn't come back. Saying "no" is an act of self-love. It's choosing yourself without stepping on others. It's understanding that you can't be everything to everyone and that that's okay. So the next time you feel that knot in your stomach before answering, take a deep breath and remember: you have the right to say "no." And the sooner you practice it, the sooner people will start respecting your "yes."
