Almost every time I’m about to tell you something, I remember my grandmother’s sayings, and in this case, I can share this one with you: “The early bird catches the worm.”
You see, here’s the story: this weekend we got right to work first thing in the morning to buy some building and renovation materials for my niece’s little house. As I’ve told you before, my husband and I left very early; he’s my faithful companion on all our adventures, but this time we were in a real rush and racing against the clock, since he had the night shift at the city’s central hospital—where he works as a nurse—and had to leave first thing in the afternoon, so we had to make the most of our time to get these heavy-duty tasks done.

Our goal was to get cement, cinder blocks, and other necessary materials, and that’s when the real odyssey began: we went to several hardware stores, and I was both amazed and, at the same time, helpless to see how prices varied from one store to another; it’s unbelievable how they play with your finances: in the stores, they give you quotes in bolivars, euros, and dollars, and honestly, the price differences are staggering; you have to become a NASA-level math expert to do mental calculations, stretch the budget, and figure out where the money we have on hand will go the farthest.

Despite everything, in several places they treated us with kindness and great enthusiasm—all to get us to buy from them. You know, sales tactics—but the reality is that our budget is what matters. Some prices were reasonable, and others scared us off. In the end, we had to resort to the “shop-around” strategy; we ended up buying a few inexpensive items at a hardware store and the rest at another place where we got a better deal.

The important thing is that we managed to get what we were looking for. We rushed home to unload the supplies so I could quickly whip up lunch and dinner for my husband to take with him on his shift at the hospital. Here are a few photos I managed to snap of the hustle and bustle at the time.
