It’s shocking to see how little people realize the value of what sustains us.
You see, let me tell you: I’ve told you many times that every time I leave home, I have to go to the bus stop; it’s a really beautiful spot because it has huge trees that provide plenty of shade, and underneath them the air is very pure and fresh; it’s a real pleasure to wait for the bus there.
But this time, when I went downstairs, I felt a deep sense of helplessness and sadness when I saw what they’d done to the biggest tree there—they’re building a warehouse or something like that right underneath it, so they’ve filled in almost all the space around it, covering all its roots with concrete, without thinking about how serious this could be in the future, since it will prevent the tree from properly absorbing the water it needs to stay alive.
This reminded me of a thought from our liberator Simón Bolívar, who said,
"An ignorant people is a blind instrument of its own destruction."
Although here the liberator was referring to politics in those days, this thought applies very well to various situations, since ignorance isn’t just about not knowing how to read, but also about not understanding how our environment works. How is it possible that they don’t know they could damage the tree forever? And that this tree helps purify the air, regulate the climate, provide us with shade, and more.
Besides this, the tree is very beautiful and large; it’s said to be about 100 years old. It’s also right on the side of the highway, and if it were to die, its branches would start falling and could cause accidents and even lead to a highway closure lasting several hours. In short, that could create chaos on the road in the long run—all because they were only thinking of themselves and doing business there at the expense of the tree.
The saddest part is that they don’t realize what they’ve done, and on top of that, not even the neighbors said anything to them. I felt very outraged, and this time I took this photo—but with a heavy heart, thinking about the future of this beautiful tree.
Thank you for your time and understanding. See you soon.
