"Don't let a donkey eat your word for grass," my grandmother used to say, and ever since I was a little girl, I've learned that giving my word is a serious matter.
Let me tell you, this Thursday I had to go pick up some materials needed to finish building my niece's house—in this case, a door and three windows—and I needed to arrange for transportation. So my husband called a friend to make the trip for us, since he knew it would be cheaper that way. He asked his friend to wait for us until 10 a.m. at a certain spot, but after we’d been waiting for a while, he called and told us to wait for him at another location—a very pretty little square.
Well, after arriving at this little square, we spent over an hour waiting for him because he was finishing up another trip, and we just kept waiting and waiting—though I took the opportunity to snap a few photos to share with you. After a while, I didn’t want to take any more photos—we were getting hungry since it was noon and we hadn’t had lunch yet—so we decided to grab a bite to eat while we waited for his ride. We were able to eat in peace, and shortly after, he showed up, and we were able to continue on our way.
When I arrived at the location and placed my order—three windows and a security door—while I was talking with him and finalizing the contract, I saw that they were installing four windows and the door. I panicked and said, “NO! I ordered three windows, not four.” The owner corrected himself and realized I was right, since I had paid for three and he was installing an extra window. The man thanked me for my honesty. He said he’s having a hard time coping with the madness everyone in Venezuela is going through—with the power outages—and that he’s losing his mind because of all the losses he’s suffered due to this. And I really understand; this is taking a toll on a lot of us.
And the thing is, I wouldn’t have been able to bring myself to cause him more loss by taking that window, knowing it wasn’t mine. He tells me they’re making seven identical windows for another lady who liked the model. To tell you the truth, one has to be honest, because what comes easily goes easily, and a life of wrongdoing always has its consequences—life rewards us according to our actions.

Les cuento, este jueves tenía el compromiso de ir a buscar un material necesario para contestar la construcción de la casa de mi sobrina, en este caso, eran una puerta y tres ventanas, y necesario conseguir un transporte. Por eso mi esposo llamo a un amigo, para que nos hiciera el viaje, pues sabía que con el sería más baratos, él amigó le pidió lo esperara hasta las 10am, en un lugar y luego de tener rato esperando, llamó y dijo que lo esperáramos en otro lugar, donde estaba una placita muy bonita.
Pues luego de estar en esta placita, duramos más de una hora esperándolo porque estaba terminando de hacer otro viaje y nosotros espere y que espere, mientras aproveche la oportunidad de tomar algunas fotografías para compartir con ustedes. Al rato ya no quería tomar más fotos sino que nos estaba dando apetito ya que era hora del mediodía y estábamos sin almorzar, entonces decidimos comernos algo mientras él transporte llegaba y pudimos comer tranquilo y al rato él apareció y pudimos seguir el rumbo.
Al llegar en el lugar y solicito mi pedido que son, tres ventanas y una puerta con protección y mientras conversaba y cerraba el contrato, veo que están montando cuatro ventanas y la puerta, y me asuste y digo, "NO" mis son tres ventanas no son cuatro, y el dueño rectifica y efectivamente se dio cuenta que yo estaba en lo correcto, pues yo le había pagado tres y me estaba poniendo una ventana de más, el señor me agradeció por mi honestidad, el dice que está un poco mal viviendo la locura de todos los venezolano, con los cortes de luz, dice estar perdiendo la cordura con tantas perdidas que ha tenido debido a a esto, y de verdad lo entiendo esto nos trae mal a muchos.
Y es que yo sería incapaz de ocasionarle más pérdida trayéndome esa ventana, sabiendo que no era mía, él me cuenta que están haciendo siete ventanas iguales para otra señora que le gustó el modelo, la verdad les digo uno tiene que ser honesto, porque lo que fácil viene fácil se va y las cosas mala vida siempre tiene sus consecuencias, la vida nos paga de acuerdo a nuestros actos.
