When it comes to fun and entertainment, you don’t have to think twice.
That’s exactly what I thought when an invitation arrived in our high school contact group, offering students and parents the chance to travel to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, for free to attend a “Knowledge Exhibition” open to all children in the municipality. The invitation came from the mayor of the Libertador municipality.
Without a second thought, I told my kids, “We’re going; let’s head to that exhibition.” Since it was free, I wanted to take advantage of it—especially since, due to the country’s current situation, I hadn’t been able to take them on an outing in a long time. These days, the money coming into the household is just enough for food and a few essentials, so outings had been completely out of the budget. I decided this was the perfect opportunity to get out and take our minds off things for a while.
I packed some food, snacks, water, and soda. Even though they told us to have a light breakfast because they’d provide a snack there, I preferred to be prepared—I always do that. It’s much better to rely on what you bring than to depend on an expectation that might not end up meeting your needs.
When we arrived, they welcomed us into a large dining hall and gave us sandwiches and juice. Afterward, we went inside the venue. I’ll admit I thought it would be something simpler, but it turned out to be quite a spectacle. It was like a maze filled with giant screens everywhere; each screen displayed an educational message about oil, minerals, farming, and all aspects of our country’s production. They also showed us all the riches our Venezuela possesses—which ones have been discovered and how many remain yet to be discovered.
Plus, they put us in a spaceship with realistic movements and gave us virtual reality headsets, simulating what it’s like to be oil in transit—it really looked spectacular. I even joked with the other representatives, saying that if I’d known they wouldn’t let us get on the little plane, I would have come dressed in my school uniform.
Everything was absolutely beautiful, and we were able to enjoy ourselves and explore again, although we did encounter a few setbacks that I’ll tell you about later—some details about how the trip went and what we went through to get there.
Thank you so much for your valuable time. See you next time. Blessings to all of you!
