When we talk about strolling through the city of Caracas, the first thing that comes to mind is a walk marked by the urban landscape, always framed by the mountains that make up this incredible coastal valley. Although we’re just a few kilometers from the sea, it’s completely absent from the capital’s urban skyline. Here—here, the boulevards, plazas, streets, sidewalks, and avenues make up the everyday landscape of a space that has grown over the years and has managed to adapt perfectly to all tastes, traditions, and customs.

Villa Mediterránea: Un Paseo Singular
Cuando hablamos de pasear por la ciudad de Caracas, lo primero que nos imaginamos es una caminata marcada por el entorno urbano, y siempre delimitada por las montañas que conforman este increíble valle costero. A pesar de encontrarnos a pocos kilómetros del mar, este está totalmente ausente del perfil urbano de la capital. Acá. Acá los bulevares, plazas, calles, aceras y avenidas son el paisaje común de un espacio que ha crecido con el pasar de los años y que ha conseguido la forma de adaptarse perfectamente a todos los gustos, tradiciones y costumbres.

Caracas is a cosmopolitan city where people of all nationalities come together in the same space, yet each person brings a different nuance to their surroundings—a trait that reminds them of their roots and a connection to those lands that, for one reason or another, remain in their memories. But despite this nostalgia, Caracas has emerged as a premier commercial hub, where large buildings dedicated to this purpose have become the favorite destinations of thousands of residents.
Caracas es una ciudad cosmopolita, en donde personas de todas las nacionalidades convergen en un mismo espacio, pero cada quien le aporta a su entorno un matiz diferente, un rasgo que le recuerda a sus raíces y un diseño hacia aquellas tierras que por alguna otra razón quedaron en el recuerdo. Pero a pesar de estas nostalgias, Caracas se ha levantado como un espacio comercial por excelencia, en donde los grandes edificios dedicados a este fin se han convertido en los destinos favoritos de miles de ciudadanos.
And so today I find myself at one of the most iconic shopping centers in the east: Centro Plaza, a place that shows its age but has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many Caracas residents. But this time, I’m not here to show you retail spaces and modern, modern, modern features; instead, I want you to join me on a tour of one of the city’s most striking areas—none other than the Mediterranean Village.
Es así como hoy llego a uno de los centros comerciales más icónicos del este; se trata de Centro Plaza, un lugar que da cuenta de algunos años de construcción, pero que ha dejado una huella indeleble en el corazón de muchos caraqueños. Pero en esta oportunidad no vengo a mostrarle locales comerciales y rasgos modernos, modernos, modernos, sino que quiero que me acompañen a través de uno de los espacios más conspicuos de esta ciudad y se trata de nada más y nada menos que de la villa mediterránea.
And so, amid corridors, inner plazas, and small galleries, we find a truly incredible area where it feels as though we’re actually walking along the cobblestone streets of Capri, enjoying the fresh Venetian air and soaking up that powerful vibe you feel when you’re by the sea, But what’s truly magical is that we’re actually in the heart of a building—one that, thanks to its incredible architecture and design, creates the perfect illusion of wandering through those villages of the Old World.
Es así como entre pasillos, plazas internas y pequeñas galerías nos encontramos con un área realmente increíble en donde pareciera que realmente estuviéramos caminando por las empedradas calles de Capri, disfrutando del Aire puro de veneto y recibiendo esa vibra fuerte que se siente cuando uno está a la orilla del mar, Pero lo verdaderamente mágico es que nos encontramos en el corazón de un edificio, pero el cual gracias a su increíble arquitectura y diseño nos crea la perfecta ilusión de estar deambulando por aquellos pueblos del viejo continente.
Here, natural light blends with artificial light; the bright colors of the neon signs contrast with stained-glass windows and stone floors, brick arches, and metal railings crafted in a very distinctive style. This space seeks to recreate—and I think it succeeds in doing so—a fascinating connection to the roots of European immigration, as those who came here designed a small but beautiful glimpse of their homelands.
Aquí la luz natural se mezcla con la artificial; los colores brillantes de los avisos de neón contrastan con vitrales y pisos de piedra, arcos de ladrillo y rejas de metal labradas con un estilo muy particular. Este espacio busca recrear y creo que logra un acercamiento muy interesante con las raíces de la inmigración europea, quienes diseñaron acá una muestra pequeña, pero muy linda de sus tierras.
Best of all, it’s a purely commercial space, where every detail seems to have been meticulously curated. Here, you’ll find everything from bazaar-style shops to spaces dedicated to selling services, open-concept restaurants, and small health centers—all coexisting in a parallel reality, since here, for a while, we leave the Venezuelan Caribbean behind to imagine ourselves surrounded by the charms of a Mediterranean rich in history.
Lo mejor de todo es que se trata de un espacio netamente comercial, en donde cada elemento pareciera estar cuidado a la perfección. Aquí se integran desde locales tipo bazar hasta espacios dedicados a la venta de servicios, restaurantes de estilo abierto y pequeños centros dedicados a la salud, todos conviviendo bajo una realidad paralela, puesto que acá, por un tiempo, dejamos de estar en el Caribe venezolano para imaginarnos frente a las bondades de un Mediterráneo lleno de historias.
It had been years since I’d walked through these hallways. I used to visit this place quite often, but over time, the old neighborhood gradually transformed, and I thought that when I returned, I might find only the remnants of those memories. But honestly, I was surprised to find myself enjoying a space that retains its vibe—it’s still very much alive; its colors still stand out vividly, and its businesses continue to struggle to stay afloat in the midst of a somewhat hostile environment.
Tenía años que no caminaba por estos pasillos. Antes este era un sitio que frecuentaba bastante, pero con el pasar del tiempo, el viejo se fue transformando y pensé que cuando regresara, me encontraría tal vez con los vestigios de aquellos recuerdos, pero sinceramente me sorprendí al disfrutar de un espacio que mantiene su vibra, ya que sigue estando vivo; sus colores aún resaltan con fuerza y sus comercios siguen luchando para mantenerse activos en medio de un entorno que es un poco hostil.
This was a stroll during which, for a few hours, I escaped the city and immersed myself not only in the architectural and geographical charm but also took the opportunity to relive old memories, reflect on how quickly time passes, and at the same time enjoy an area whose details and features make it a unique and unparalleled space within the city.
Este es un paseo en donde por unas horas me alejé de la ciudad, y me sumergí no solo en la ilusión arquitectónica y geográfica, sino que también aproveché para revivir viejos recuerdos, pensar en lo rápido que transcurre el tiempo y al mismo tiempo disfrutar de una zona cuyos detalles y rasgos la convierten en un espacio único e insuperable dentro de la ciudad.
