Saludos.
Greetings. The friend @damarysvibra in her column for the
@beentrepreneur community leaves us the invitation to reflect on the importance of self-discipline in our personal life and in the field of entrepreneurship. Let me tell you...
Discipline is always related to willpower, to our ability to persist in a project or idea, regardless of the fact that the expected results and gratification do not come immediately. Here the most important thing is to sustain the effort to achieve a goal that does not seem close.
The cultivation of discipline becomes more difficult when the reward is not just around the corner, when it has to be deferred for an indefinite period of time. In such cases, willpower wanes and it is all too easy to give in to the temptation to abandon the purpose.
Surely we have all known an example where discipline falters. A very common one has to do with projects such as losing weight.
Let us suppose that we propose, for example, to lose four kilos, it is something that surely we are not going to achieve from one day to another, that will require to abandon some "tasty" habits, that to be able to achieve it we have to assume a few sacrifices. All those setbacks will sap our will and unless we have cultivated self-discipline it will be difficult to reach the goal.
But the important thing to know is that we can all cultivate self-discipline. As in situations of this type, there are no magic formulas or recipes. Each person has to explore the alternatives that allow him/her to maintain the will. What is indispensable is clarity of purpose; if the purpose is important and meaningful to us, it is quite likely that we will be able to find the motivation to go on...
I have been writing texts like this one as one of my main activities for a few years now. Getting them done periodically has forced me to develop a certain discipline. There are many days when I would rather do other things, stay reading, go for a walk or watch TV. These activities require almost no effort from me, and that is precisely why they are so tempting.
When I am about to throw in the towel and stop writing the publication, I start thinking about the positive things I get from writing. One is the financial compensation I receive. Another is the satisfaction of seeing the work come to fruition. There is also the awareness that the activity of writing is a great exercise for my brain, it forces me to activate a series of processes that contribute to my mental health. Periodically thinking about all these motivations pushes me to push forward when my will is weak.
I also tend to think that each piece of writing is always an act of creation, an act of building something from nothing. Concluding a text that didn't exist hours before is always gratifying. Learning to value what we do is a good way to keep motivation high.
To develop discipline, everyone can find little tricks, but in my case they are always related to taking the first step.
If it is about writing, the first thing I do is to turn on the computer, with that I am already indicating to my brain that it is time to start something else. Then I type some word. The first one that comes to my mind, the idea is to place myself in another scenario, that of starting to work. After those two steps I will almost certainly finish the writing, or at least have it completely sketched out. I almost never leave anything more than a word on the computer screen ...
If it comes to my exercise routines the process is basically the same. I look at the table where I have my mat and grab it, spread it out on the floor and go to where I have my light dumbbells. If I manage to grab the dumbbells the task is done, I'm sure I'm going to start, and if I start I'll most likely do a good workout. I may not do all the ones I need to one day but I will certainly not stay at zero.
There are words that sometimes we don't like because they sound imposing, deterministic or unfriendly, one of them is "indispensable". With fear of being pretentious I would dare to say that practicing self-discipline is "indispensable" in the field of entrepreneurship.
Thank you for your time.
