At the gym | En el gimnasio

Not only can you take part in physical activity at any age, but it’s the best thing you can do!
I started training when I was 35. As a teenager, I used to play handball (and I loved it), but then I gave it up. When I took it up again, I started learning Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art – often referred to as ‘Chinese boxing’. I was interested in learning how to defend myself, but my body and mind wanted something more. So I switched to boxing. It was a great decision that I’d recommend to anyone who’s even slightly curious. I trained really hard back then; I went every day (three days for boxing and two for kickboxing).
I got injured once and, as I couldn’t carry on with the sport, I started going to the gym. That opened up a whole new world for me, and I learnt just how important strength training is.
Today I’m training at home. You can achieve a great deal with very few pieces of kit – or even without any at all. But what I think is important to highlight about physical activity is the following:
• Your hormones will thank you for it
• Insomnia fades away
• It’s a great help in reducing depression
• It boosts self-confidence and self-esteem
• You realise you can do much more than you thought
• Strength training helps you build muscle mass
• Your brain functions better, and it’s key to preventing cognitive decline
Another day I’ll tell you about the different sports I’ve tried. It’s great to find something you like and enjoy, and you only discover that by searching and giving things a go. But the most important thing is not to sit still. Let’s get moving!

A moverse!
