"Que tu alimento sea tu medicina, y que tu medicina sea tu alimento".
Hipócrates en Atenas, 400 a. C.

Health begins here—and it can end here.

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."
Hippocrates in Athens, 400 BC.

Health begins here.

[Fresh vegetables and seasonal fruits, as recommended by chefs]

It starts with the choices we make when buying our food and the peace of mind that comes from a restful night's sleep. It also involves the good fortune of not inheriting too many predispositions to illness. Because the truth is, sometimes no matter how well a person takes care of themselves, they can still end up suffering from any number of diseases.
It is a matter over which we have little control—or even sufficient early information. Today, medical science performs prenatal tests to diagnose certain predictable issues, yet we are far from being able to predict the future with certainty; that future will always be shaped by our environment, our habits, and even accidents.

[A family gathering where sometimes I have one drink, but other times, two]

Once a year does no harm, but we often end up overindulging more frequently than is wise. A few drinks, pizza, or sweets—to name just a few culinary indulgences. Personally, I admit to having a tremendous weakness for bread and ice cream.
All the willpower I mustered to quit smoking 12 or 13 years ago—after nearly 40 years of the habit—hasn't been of much use to me when faced with a plate of food.
Considering how fortunate I’ve been to give up tobacco without suffering any lasting health consequences so far, I now try to lead a healthier life—without going to extremes. I love red wine with a meal, but I limit myself to just one glass because it raises my blood pressure. The upside is that the slightest excess triggers two warning signs: my ears turn red and hot. At that point, I switch from wine to water.

[Botanical Garden walkway on Santa Fe Avenue, Buenos Aires.]

Although I live in a big city now, I am fortunate to have access to an environment with little to no pollution and abundant, tree-filled green spaces; these areas boost my well-being by inviting me to take walks and breathe in a sense of emotional peace.

[Lemon with ginger—an Ayurvedic preparation, a form of traditional Indian medicine.]

As for the various treatment trends out there, I prefer remedies based on medicinal plants; however, without dismissing conventional medicine, I have no qualms about trying acupuncture or other sensible disciplines.
Since I have high blood pressure, I tried managing it for a while with herbal infusions and culinary ingredients, but they didn't live up to their reputation for effectiveness, so I went back to pharmaceutical medication.
It reminds me of a doctor friend of mine who was diagnosed with cancer; alongside his chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he supplemented his treatment with various plant-based preparations. When my son developed a kidney problem, we turned to the necessary antibiotics to fight the infection, along with other prescribed medications. While we were considering surgery to remove a 10 x 6-millimeter stone, he drank juice from certain wild plants and other concoctions recommended by a naturopathic doctor—with such success that, ten days later, he passed the stone in his urine without pain or blood. There was no need for the scalpel.

It is worth noting that I have never turned to prayer seeking healing, though I am aware of the power of faith, which can undoubtedly be more effective than a placebo. I have seen both work in certain circumstances, and I wouldn't hesitate to try anything in a dire situation—because, as the saying goes, a drowning person will clutch at a red-hot nail.
The only thing I will oppose with all my might and every possible tactic is getting vaccinated again against a new pandemic. God forbid.

I also need to touch upon the subject of mental health; when I felt I was losing mine, I didn't hesitate to see a psychiatrist and take the prescribed psychotropic drugs.
Over the years, and with changes in habits and circumstances, I successfully stopped taking them—despite the doctor's recommendation—thanks to the habit I had developed of meditating regularly.

Sometimes I forget, but I always return to it, and the stillness works its magic.

All that remains is to invite two friends to participate—though this implies no obligation, nor does it limit anyone else who wishes to join the initiative from doing so. Everyone is welcome. This time, I’ll mention eugelys@eugelys and edwing357@edwing357; I hope they feel inspired to take part.

And now, the same thing in English, via Google Translate.
