Y no exagero.

Me volví torpe.

No quería llegar a casa. Me quedé pasmado.

English version

I feel the emptiness of his body. It is the hardest absence I have ever faced. You can't think about life after having the one you love by your side and then losing her. There is no hope and you feel like you are in a big hole that you can't get out of. No one tells you, no one prepares you, and even if they warn you or tell you or insist on it, life without the person you love the most can only be compared to an endless dark night, that night that never ends.

I met her one day crossing the park. Although meeting is saying too much, because that day I only became aware of her presence, and her charm. Although I saw her for the first time, I felt that that moment was enough to love her for a lifetime. And I am not exaggerating. She was coming towards me, she smiled and I followed her. I turned to look at her, and unlike those romantic stories where the two souls recognize each other and know they will love each other for a lifetime, she never turned.

I did stop, I watched him leave and it happened to me like it does in the movies: time stopped. Although it only happened in my imagination. I got to work, took care of all the business and pending matters, and forgot about that instant for the rest of the day. When I got home, however, the memory suddenly surfaced, and I drew her face on my blog.

The next day I returned, as always, to the same routine. After breakfast I left the house on my way to work, and again, crossing the park, I met her again. I smiled at her, she smiled at me, and I turned to watch her walk away. I met her several times, we looked at each other without saying anything, we smiled at each other, and once, she turned around, stopped for a moment and raised her hand -with her charming smile- in a farewell gesture.

That day I was overjoyed. I became clumsy. I didn't pay attention to the orders or to what my colleagues were telling me. Frank, the store manager, told me that I was very giggly, and jokingly said if I had found the love of my life. “I think so, if it's not a dream” I replied. He patted my back and let out a laugh. In view of the situation, he gave me the rest of the afternoon off.

I didn't want to get home. So I decided to go for a walk along the boulevards and go into a tavern or a café to put my thoughts in order. In these ramblings, I looked out the window of a bar, and there she was. Sitting, with a look between lost and doubtful. I was stunned. Would I do as in the movies, or would I follow my course, only to curse myself for having missed that opportunity? I remembered a scene from a movie where the father told his children how he met their mother. The man told them that it only took five seconds of courage not to regret for the rest of their lives not having made the right choices. And it was those five seconds that were the deciding ones, those five seconds that I took to walk in and cross the bar to where she was, introduce myself and tell her everything I had to tell her...

It is always said that reality exceeds fiction, and this was no exception. We had a nice conversation, and then we got to know each other. The love grew to the point that we would be together, forever, as you're supposed to say when you make your vows... for life, and we were. I just thought that would never happen, that she would leave me and I would be here, after almost forty years of that encounter, missing her, with sadness in my heart, with her absence at home, waiting for my turn to keep her company, wherever she is.
