"What happened to us?", is the question that comes to mind whenever you remember someone that you used to be very close. You just somehow stopped communicating and seeing each other as much as you use to and before you know it, someone you used to catch up with everytime become someone who you barely speak to. This mostly doesn't occur because of a fight or betrayal. It just happens anyways.
This one of the many realities of growing up aka adulthood that nobody prepares us for. We used to be taught about how to comport ourselves, morals, hygiene and so on, but we weren't groomed about how friendship grow apart naturally. Maybe if this was specifically addressed to every young person growing up we would have cherished our friendship more and ensure we keep the fire burning.
When I was much younger, in Secondary school, I had friends I genuinely believed would be my friends in the next couple of decades. We spent time together every day of the week except Saturday and Sunday. We talked about everything, ate together, fought our battles together and laughed about things that may not even be funny to other people just because we understand ourselves so much.

At that time, when you have a really close pal that you can share everything with, you feel it would just be only you guys forever. Then, reality checks began when we finished secondary school. Everyone started going their different ways. Some couldn't even make it for Graduation Ceremony because they have left the country - that's how quick it was. We all got admission into different Higher Institutions of Learning in different States, started making new friends and everyone slowly begin to build a new life.
It got so funny that one of my closest friends in the Secondary school was in the same university as mine but different department. We tried to keep in touch at first during the first thre weeks. We would call, send messages and promise to catchup at the cafeteria or hostel, but gradually due to the intensity of academic works the calls became less frequent and the conversations became shorter. We started making new friends that we shared similar interests and could share our experiences with.

Another situation was some few years back, there was a friend that we both worked in the same company and also rented apartment in the same mini estate. You can understand the extent to which we must have been close. If I'm the one that gets ready for work first, I will go to her apartment and hurry her up and vice versa. We come back home together. We cook and share with each other. We chat about all that happened in the office during the day when we get home and so much more. After working in the same company and staying in the same mini estate for close to three years, she resigned from work because she wanted to start her company and consequently moved out from the estate. It was at that point that we started having fewer communication till date that we may just check on each other after about 4 months.
And when we try to speak on the phone the conversations weren't as smooth as it used to be. In this situation, I know my friend to be someone who will open up and tell you things when you're physically present together but it's not the same on a phone call. So phone conversations does not give room for much indepth heart to heart conversations. It does not mean that one person offends the other, it is just mostly caused by distance and that fact of not being able to survive in isolation
The true reality of life is that as we grow older our priorities change and the things that interest and matter to us 20 years ago may not matter now. The things we tolerated when we younger may no longer be tolerated now. You may be more concerned about your career, business, family and personal growth as opposed to the other person.

So, have you ever looked back and realised that you have outgrown someone? Did it happen naturally or did something happen?
