Have you ever taken a keen look at someone and say to yourself, "This man or woman is successful!"? This may be as a result of the exotic lifestyle they live, the houses, the cars, a booming business or even the pictures of the different trips they take all around the world. From afar, they life a perfect life that is worthy of admiration but have you on a second thought ever wondered if that person is happy and actually successful? The question is whether we are measuring success with the right yardstick.
Well, that's the topic we will be deliberating on in this post. What success actually mean!
The thing is that from childhood we have been groomed either directly or indirectly that you must go to school, get a good well paying job, build a house, buy a car, get married and have children before you can be said to be successful. These are amazing achievements and yes there is nothing bad about it. However, where the problem of the society begin is when we start to have the mindset that everyone must follow the same route to be successful.
The society have created a stereotype of what a successful person should look like and they begin to question you, for instance if you are not married at a particular age or they believe you are not doing fine in your career if you don't drive a car. You might even be driving a car but they believe it doesn't befit you at the level they have created for you in their mind.
Sometimes, we complain and feel unfulfilled even when we are making progress just because our achievements do not seem to be up to the standard of the people around you. But in the real sense of it who created these rules or yardsticks and why must we all follow the same path?
One thing that I have come to terms with over the years is that life isn't a competition and it should be treated as such. We are from different backgrounds, different upbringing and we face different challenges in life and we approach these challenges differently too. Imagine two people who graduated from a fashion school at the same time, one gets good funding to start up her own business and is doing fine, with staff and choking orders everyday. While the other is managing her small business with not to much staff but she's making sales and earning income. Does that automatically mean the first person described is more successful? It is not entirely correct.
The first person may be doing well and it is applaudable. On the other hand the second person is also making progress which may not be seen immediately but with time she'd level up and probably expand her business. We need to refrain from comparing people without knowing their stories and background. What we often see is the results and achievements but we don't usually see the sacrifices, pain, disappointments and their drive. This is the main reason you shouldn't compare your journey with others. You should not feel like a failure because of someone's success.

Money plays an important role in our lives and if we are being honest it matters 100%. It is used to pay bills, provide for our families and it gives us the room to enjoy the best things of life. I'd not pretend as if financial stability is not important, however, I don't believe money should be the only measure of success. Let's take into consideration someone who earns a reasonable amount of income and can feed their family comfortably, sleep with their two eyes closed at night and are able to enjoy healthy relationships with their loved ones. On the other hand, a person who earns so much money but is unable to sleep peacefully at night or even able to spend time with their loved ones because of reasons best known to them. It may not be easy to say who is successful but money without peace of mind may be unhealthy. We should embrace financial stability that would not mean that we would throw away our health, peace of mind and quality memorable moments with loved ones.
A major concern that needs to be addressed is people place importance on looking successful rather than building a life, a real one that is worthy of emulation. Social media made this more worse. We see people posting pictures and videos of them travelling, buying new cars, packing into new homes, wearing expensive jewelleries and outfits, and so on. In no time, we begin to use those things to measure our lives and not bear in mind that people choose what they post.
sourceWe don't always see the full picture. You may see someone's bought a new car - do you know how many instalments they paid before finishing up? You may see a smiling face but do you know what's hidden behind the smiles? It is advisable not to kill yourself in proving your worth to everybody. Simply grow at your pace and celebrate your little achievements and wins. You can grow your life without turning it into a competition.
