Comparison is a joy stealer. It makes you think you are not doing well for yourself and that others have it all.
If you want to have a fulfilled life and stay happy, one of the habits you need to stop is comparing yourself to others.
Mr. A has a car, and he takes it to work every day. You are sad that you do not have the money to buy a car, and you envy Mr. A. But if only you knew Mr. A's story, you would not envy him for having a car.
Mr. A is regretting getting that car because it is one problem after another every day. He spends a lot of money every week just to keep the car moving, and it is already becoming tiring. He is now planning to sell it so he can have peace of mind. Yet, there you are, thinking his life is all rosy without knowing the full story. You see the car and the person driving it, but you do not know the story behind the scenes.
Mr. B is a successful entrepreneur. He owns many businesses and employs many staff members. You start questioning your Creator, wondering why He cannot make you like Mr. B. If only you knew that Mr. B was in a lot of debt and had no peace of mind because he was constantly thinking about how to pay it off. On the surface, he looks rich and successful, but internally, he is dealing with debt.
You can never know what is going on in other people's lives because most people only show you the good side of themselves, their achievements, and their success stories. No one comes out to share their problems unless they need a donation.
Sometimes, you become so focused on what others have that you fail to appreciate how far you have come. You forget the struggles you have overcome and the little progress you have made because you are busy measuring your life against someone else's. Remember that someone else's success does not mean you are failing, and their progress does not mean you are behind in life. Everyone has a different journey, and we all move at different speeds.
So stop envying people you do not know. The person you should be comparing yourself with is your old self. Compare yourself with your past. The main thing is to make sure your present is better than your past. As long as you are learning, growing, and making progress, no matter how small, you have a reason to be proud of yourself. You do not need to be ahead of everyone else to be doing well in life.
