Hello, everyone.
I welcome you to my blog. In the years, one thing I have discovered that kills us from the inside faster is comparison. The moment you start to compare yourself with others (friends, coursemates, classmates, roommates or just neighbours), it gives room to the highest level of sadness, and even depression starts to creep in. Today many people are depressed not because they are not making progress in life but because they are busy comparing themselves with others and ignoring how much they themselves have progressed. The moment you start to use another person's life to check and compare with yours, you have put yourself in a fight you might not win.
Comparison makes you feel like you are not where you are supposed to be and that you need to do more, work more and put in more effort, therefore putting you under so much pressure, and it completely blinds you and stops you from seeing or acknowledging your life's progress. Comparison makes you feel like you are moving backwards while others are moving forward; comparison makes you feel like your own life is recessing while that of others is busy progressing, and trust me, it does not kill one's joy more than that feeling that others are doing better while things keep getting worse for you.
Like I said earlier, the fastest way to slip into depression is by comparing yourself with others. I used to be one who compares himself with others, but I learnt the hard way because I almost killed myself with the pressure that came with doing that. I had coursemates and friends all around me, and everything they did, I wanted to do as well, and if I am not able to, I automatically start to feel like I am lagging behind, and that really pressured me, and it was killing, and in no time I moved from being happy to never being happy, all because I have not been able to meet up.
Along the line I realised that these friends and coursemates I was comparing myself to had the tutor of support I did not have; I did not have uncles abroad and even here in the country that were present in their lives, providing for them even after their parents had provided for them. Some had a business of their own and other sources of income that provided for them about two times my earnings. I learnt that we can be mates and all of that, but our earnings and support cannot be the same, so why compare yourself when you don't even know what goes on behind the scenes?
I also learnt that life is not a competition because everything happens at its own time and season; when you compare yourself, you will want them to happen at the wrong time and at a time that even you are not ready or can handle. Move at your own pace and let others move at their own pace, don't try to move at another person's pace.
