STEP BY STEP GUIDE ON HOW I MADE A MAXI DRESS FOR A CUSTOMER USING ANKARA FABRIC
Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗
In this post I will be sharing with you how I made a maxi dress for a customer using ankara fabrics. The customer simply wanted an outfit that is stylish and comfortable, so we opted for this maxi length dress that has a flared bell sleeves and a stand out velvet bias on the front of the dress. Also, I made use of black lining to give the dress two things, structure and good finish.
Now, let's go through the process I underwent in creating this dress togther.
Materials
- 3 yards of Ankara fabric
- 2½ vlack lining
- Velvet bias
- Zip
- Matching threads
- Scissors
Measurements Used
- Bust – 46"
- Upper bust – 42"
- Underbust – 16.5"
- Top length – 26"
- Waist – 42"
- Round shoulder circumference – 48"
- Hip – 47"
- Full length – 60"
Step by Step
I started by spreading the ankara fabric on my cutting/ironing table and started to draft the pattern on the fabric.
I marked out the bust, waist, hip area and full length (60") measurements. Considering it is a maxi dress I cut in such a way that it will have a flowing look. After drafting, I cut out the front and back pieces.Next, I cut out the lining needed to give the dress structure and neat finishing. The lining is intended to "line" every part of the dress (front, back and sleeves) from inside.
Now that I have cut the main fabric and the lining, I started joining the pieces together. I joined the front and back pieces together at the shoulder and sides and checked that it was well aligned before stitching together. I also created the place where the zip will be attcahed and the sleeves as well.
- Next I joined the the front and back pieces of the lining as well. The continued to use the lining to turn the main ankara fabrics so as to conceal the stitches and give it a good finishing.
Quick one, before I joined the front and back pieces together, I placed the velvet bias on the front piece of the ankara fabric and stitched it together to give the look in the images shared.
Next, to create the sleeves, I folded the ankara fabric and measured the sleeve length of 20" from the top of the sleeve down, and i added extra allowance.
Next, using the armhole shape and upper arm measurements i drafted out the upper part. Then to create the bell effect I widen the sleeve from the elbow area to the bottom. Then I cut it out, joined the seams and attached it to the dress.
Next I attached the zip on the back piece in the space that has been provided for it earlier on and did the finishing for the dress by checking that every stitch was properly secured and removing loose threads. Then I gave the dress a good press all round.
Then I wore it on my mannequin to check for the fitting and other necessary adjustments.
Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.
