MY BROILER CHICKS ARE 7 DAYS OLD! || A WEEK OF PATIENCE, HARD WORK AND LEARNING
Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗
About a week ago, I shared that I started a mini poultry farm in my backyard and I also shared how I prepared the space and brought home 25 day old broiler chicks. Guess what? The broiler chicks are now 7 days old. It has been a week since the chicks arrived in the farm and I can tell you that my routine has been quite different in the past one week as it requires a lot of patience, attention and hard work.
I understand that I must be readily available to take care of the birds and ensure that they grow in a comfortable environment but experiencing it in the past one week makes me understand what it really entails especially in the early days.
In the past seven days I have had to pay close and constant attention to their temperature. During the day, I monitor the movement of the sun as the sun doesn't shine on every side at the same time. Whenever the sun begins to shine on one side of the cage I bring down the tarpaulin on that side to provide adequate shade while the other side that does not have direct sunlight keeps them ventilated. This has been part of my daily routine for the past one week.
On the other, it is a different situation at night. The temperature can become quite cold and I have had to provide heat for them at least three times in the past seven days using charcoal pot. The charcoal pot will be carefully placed inside the cage in a way that they won't tamper with it. I also check up on them at least twice during the night over the past week to ensure the heat isn't too much and not too little and to ensure that they are feeding well. The night checks is a reminder that it takes so much patience and time to handle these chicks.
More importantly, I ensure that there is always feed and water in their feeding and drinking troughs respectively throughout the day. It's quite fun to watch them eager to eat and drink and also gather around the feeders and drinkers. I also try as much as possible to keep their feeding and drinking troughs clean to avoid them getting contaminated.
Even though they are just seven days old I can see noticeable changes in their size compared to when they first arrived. I'm quite impressed with their growth. They are more active, the feathers on the wings are beginning to form and they are growing taller. As a first time broiler farmer it's a great feeling to experience their daily growth to this point.
This is a brief summary of my first week of poultry farming and it has been a week summed with constant monitoring and feeding of the birds.
Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.
