Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗
If you have been following my posts especially in the #NeedleWorkMonday community, you'd probably have known me as a fashion designer who loves to share her sewing works and also sharing my experiences with my customers and in the fashion business in general.
Well, in this post today I'm elated to be sharing something quite different with you. Apart from my usual fashion and sewing posts, I'm beginning a new journey and this time it has to do with agriculture. In other words, you'd be seeing me posts about agricultural contents.
I'm pleased to be making my first official post in the #agriculturalmindset community and I'm looking forward to meeting like minds who are passionate about agriculture as we get to interact.
So, I recently just began the process of starting a mini poultry farm right in my backyard. As much as I fancy fashion designing, I have been thinking about other ways to generate income and make more money especially as the Christmas season is fast approaching even though I plan to do the farm beyond the festive season. It may become my lifestyle as time goes on.
The only space available at my disposal at the moment to rear some broiler chicken and sell when they mature is in my backyard. I choose broilers because they are less capital intensive unlike layers that cost quite some money to setup. Layers was my first option, so that I can sell eggs on a daily basis but after doing my research I discovered that it cost quite some money to get it set-up.
Well, considering the timing, with the festive period approaching, I saw an opportunity to raise the chicken and ensure they are ready for sale during Christmas celebrations when it will be in high demand with many families looking for chicken to buy for the festivities. I plan to rear them to around six to seven weeks old before Christmas depending on how fast they grow.
No doubt about the fact that poultry farming is not just about buying chicks, feeding them and selling them. It is a long process from knowing how to feed them effectively, disease prevention and hygiene, temperature management and so on. In respect to this, I'm in good hands. My mum has so many years of experience in the poultry farming so she'd be available to teach me the basics and assist me in making sure my farm is at its best.
Before I started this project there was concern about the space I'd use because I live in a rented apartment. I could not just wake up one morning and begin a farm in my backyard without informing the owner of the house. I had to speak to my landlord first about my intentions and thankfully she granted me permission to use the space. However, she made it clear that I must ensure the area is clean at all times. Well, this is quite understandable. Proper hygiene around a poultry farm isn't only good for the comfort of people living around but also for the overall health of the birds.
So after i got permission from my landlord I started the process of making a cage. I contracted a carpenter to construct the cage and I told him that he nust use good quality materials because I want it strong and durable. The cage has been completed some weeks ago but I didnt immediately buy the birds. I wanted it to be about six weeks before Christmas before I make the purchases.
So, yesterday I finally brought in 25 day old broiler chicks. I'm starting with 25 birds because this is my first experience managing a poultry farm, so I want to begin with a number I can easily manage. Along with the broiler chicks I also bought their feeds, drinking and feeding troughs. I quite understand that dealing with day old chicks need so much care and attention so I wont take this early stage for granted.
Thank you for reading and see you in my next one.
