Greetings, members of the Agricultural Mindset community. I welcome you all to my blog. I'm so excited to be a part of this great family, and today I will be sharing something very crucial with you all concerning my poultry farming.
Today, I want to share my view on the topic Poultry farming is more than raising a chicken.
What is Poultry farming?
Poultry farming refers to the act of raising animals such as birds, chickens, goats, cows, fowls, and so on, for meat and eggs or for sale.
The word Agriculture is very important here in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. That is because it makes food available and accessible to everyone. It also creates lifetime job opportunities for people who are willing to work and earn from their work either on a daily basis or on a monthly basis.
Here in Nigeria, for instance, poultry farming offers great opportunities for men and women who wish to start up their small businesses, and also helps to make food available to everyone. But one of the most important things about poultry farming is that it requires one's knowledge, time, effort, patience, and funds to run a successful poultry farming business.
How can we manage our poultry farm?
There are so many things an agriculturist should know about a poultry farming business. Poultry farming is different from the water leaf business; it requires many skills from the person managing it. Here are the things everyone should know about poultry farming:
- Setting up a poultry farm usually requires adequate preparation. One must be prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure that his or her poultry business is flourishing.
One who owns a poultry farm must consider the location, a well- constructed site, clean water for the chicks, feeders, drinkers, as well as other necessary equipment that is needed to make the chicks comfortable.
- Another thing is brooding and providing warmth for chicks. The word brooding entails taking proper care of the chicks most especially in their early days. When the chicks are still young, they require a safer environment and a good temperature in order for them to survive. So it is the duty of the farmer to provide heat sources, and he or she must also make sure that the chicks do not stay under the heat for too long.
There should be enough space for them to move away from the heat for some hours.
This will allow farmers to carefully observe the chicks and also find out if they are actually growing.
The heat sources prevent the chicks from untimely death.
- Feeding and Nutrition
Feeding and nutrition are essential in every poultry farming business. Feeding aids growth and supports the development of poultry birds. The chickens we raised require a balanced meal just like we human beings.
So their meals should always contain minerals, protein, vitamins, energy, and other nutrients that are required to make them healthy. Broilers, for instance, are usually given starter feed in their early stage, but as they grow, the finisher feed is given to them before they can be sold out.
So it is advisable for every farmer to make sure that he or she purchases quality feeds for his or her chicks. Do not waste your money on feeds that are not helping your chicks grow; go for quality feeds that can help your chicks grow. Good feeds reduce the high rate of death among the chicks.
- Water Management
The last thing I want to talk about is water Management. As they say, water is life, and I agree with that. Every chick needs clean water to drink. Poultry farmers must try as much as possible to always provide clean water for the chicks. The chicks should be prevented from drinking dirty water, because it can damage their health, and also cause them to contract many diseases.
In conclusion, poultry farming is more than raising a chicken. It is something everyone should consider doing. Though it is stressful, the outcome is always recommendable.
