Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl debbie-ese@debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗

Some dresses are specially made for special events and as fashion designer we always bear it in mind that some outfits mean more than just clothes to our customers. They are often made for important moments like wedding, birthday, proposals and even burial ceremonies.

For this outfits I will be sharing, it is for a customer that contacted me to make a skirt and blouse for her that she can wear for her mother's burial ceremony. Interestingly, we are making two same exact outfit, one for her and one for her sister who isn't based in Nigeria who needs a fashion designer to make her dress for her. More Interestingly, they are making four outfits in total, two for each. One for the burial ceremony and the other outfit for thanksgiving service on Sunday.

However, for this post I will be sharing the step by step process of making the outfit for the burial day. I will share the second outfit another time.

The style has a fitted blouse with a high collar and a skirt that fits from the waist down the bottom. We will be using lace fabrics and lining to give the dress structure and neat finishing.

Materials Needed

  • 4 yards of lace fabric
  • 4 yards of lining
  • 1 yard of hair stay
  • ¼ yard of breast pad
  • 2 zips (one for the blouse and one for the skirt)
  • Tailoring chalk
  • Matching sewing threads

Measurements

  • Bust - 43"
  • Upper bust - 41"
  • Underbust – 14.5"
  • Waist – 40"
  • Hip – 44"
  • Round shoulder circumference – 47"
  • Top length – 24"
  • Full length – 57"

Step by Step

  • I started by folding the lace fabrics into two ensuring that the right side were facing each other. Then I used the measurements of the customer to draft the pattern of the blouse on the fabric.

  • Using my tailoring chalk I marked out the bust, waist, shoulder and blouse length and added 2" seam allowance to give room for sewing and any adjustments.

  • Next, I cut out the front and back pieces. I added 1.5" for zipper allowance at the centre back where the zip will be attcahed.

  • Next, I folded the lining into two on my table and placed the lace fabrics that I have cut on it to serve as a guide to cut out the front and back lining pieces.

  • Next, on the front bodice, I placed the breast pad on the area it is supposed to be on the front piece and also used hairstay as interfacing to give support and more firemness. I used my pressing iron to give it a good press.

  • Next, I joined the front and back pieces of the main lace fabric together and also repeated the same process for the lining. I also joined the shoulder and side seams as well. Then I placed the lace fabrics that I have joined and the lining together and the used the lining to turn the bodice which will give the edges a neat finish. I now used my pressing iron to press the edges neatly to maintain its shape.

  • Next I joined the shoulder area of the front piece and back piece together and also pressed them flat with my pressing iron. Then i joined the zip to the centre of the blouse.

  • Now, I moved to one of the prominent features of the dress which is the collar. I measured the finished neckline of the blouse so that I can have a fitting collar. Then I cut out a rectangular piece of the lace fabric and used interfacing to give it enough support because the lace fabrics is a delicate fabrics and may not hold its shape firmly.

  • Next, I joined the collar piece with right sides facing each other and stitched to form a circular band and I pressed it flat and attached to the neckline.

  • Next, I folded the remaining lace fabric into two and drafted the skirt pattern using the customer's waist measurement of 40", hip measurement of 44" and 33" of skirt length. I marked the waist and hip areas and drafted it to be fitted down to the bottom. I added 2" seam allowance and also 1.5" zip allowance at the centre.

  • Next, I cut the lace fabrics out and used it to cut out the lining fabrics. Then I joined the skirt pieces and lining pieces. Then I inserted the zip on the skirt.

  • Next, I did the finishing by checking for loose threads and using pressing iron to flatten all seams properly.

  • Then I placed it the skirt and blouse on the mannequin to check for the overall look of the outfit.

Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.
