Tonightās dinner reminded me of something I sometimes forget when Iām hungry and my brain is on autopilot: good food doesnāt have to be expensive, but you do need to be willing to take a slightly different path.
Instead of heading to the usual spots, I wandered into Woodlands Glenās Grains and Hops Bistro and somehow ended up standing in front of Yes Nasi Kukus. The stall name was cheerful (that big āYes!ā energy), and the photos on the menu board were basically shouting fried chicken + rice + sauce = comfort. So of course, I did what I always do when I discover a new placeā¦
I ordered their Signature Fried Chicken.
Itās a habit at this point: first visit = best seller / signature dish. Itās the quickest way to understand what a stall is proud of. And since their specialty is fried chicken (also one of my favorite dishes), it just made sense. No overthinking, no āmaybe I should try something safer.ā I was absolutely starving and ready to munch, so I went straight for the star of the show.
When the staff told me it would take about 5 minutes, I got genuinely excited š because five minutes usually means one thing: freshly fried. Not reheated, not āwaiting under the warmer,ā but hot-from-the-oil kind of fresh. And yes, when my plate arrived, the chicken was still steaming hot. That first moment, when you can feel the heat coming off the crust and you know the crunch is going to be real⦠happiness. Instant happiness.
Now, letās talk about the dish itself. Nasi Kukus literally means steamed rice, and the rice here was served in a neat mound, fluffy and clean-tasting, the kind of rice thatās meant to be a base for all the bold stuff happening around it. The gravy (that golden-brown sauce) poured over the top gave the rice a richer, slightly spiced warmth, and every spoonful became this comforting mix of soft grains and saucy goodness.
But the fried chicken⦠thatās the main character.
Itās a classic style, and honestly, thatās a compliment. āClassicā to me means the recipe has been tested so many times that itās already been perfected. The skin had a proper crispness, with little crunchy bits clinging on like bonus toppings. Inside, the meat was tender and juicy, especially satisfying because it wasnāt dry at all (which is my fear with fried chicken sometimes). It felt like the kind of chicken you donāt need to drown in sauce to enjoy⦠but youāll still happily do it anyway.
And the best part?
The price: SGD 5.00.
For the size of the chicken, thatās a very, very good deal. The serving was generous, the frying was fresh (huge bonus), and it didnāt feel like ācheap food.ā It felt like value food, the kind that makes you pause and go, wait, why am I paying more elsewhere?
The set also came with complimentary sides: half a boiled egg, and pickled vegetables with pineapple, which helped cut through the richness with a sweet-tangy bite. Then there was the chili paste⦠and wow. This chili packed a punch. Iād call it highly spicy, the kind that wakes you up mid-bite and makes you reach for your drink immediately. Worth it though š
Overall, this dinner was a happy discovery, tasty, comforting, and budget-friendly. Iāll definitely be back to try more dishes, but for a first visit, the signature fried chicken was the perfect choice.
