Who decides what you have to do? There is this urge at the end of every year to get everything done. Although many complain that they are bored of this repetitive rythm, they conform. The shopping spree and the hoarding of food starts early, as millions of people rush like tiny ants to be part of this overall picture. At the end of it all, they're tired, angry and numb. They have all sorts of buyer's remorses and they feel dried out. Why?
The motivation behind the end of the year madness varies for each and every one of us. We want to catch up with others, we want to prove that we can afford those expensive lights, we want to show that we care, we have to have those nice pictures showing how great our life is. While some are genuinely happy to conform, some despise it. While spending money, they count their losses and hate the holidays. So many gifts to buy, so many people to visit, so much hassle with the tree. Those people hate the holidays not because they are Scrooge, but because the rythm of it all is off. When there is so much need for validation in the air, where is the real sparkle of love?
I wish people were a fan of the holidays every day.. For what holidays really mean, not for what we made them become. I wish people would learn to spend 100 dollars throughout the year by making small loving gestures instead of trying to overcompensate in december. If you ignore your loved one for 11 months, would that one month of "have to love you" really make a difference? Nothing good ever comes out when people have to do things against their own will. While lines of individuals might seem like Christmas spirit is coming, a closer look could reveal that while their body is there, their mind is elsewhere.
There should be some concern about these millions of people shopping for love absent minded, drained of their energy, running from store to store trying to find the right object to express love. In our modern quest for quality gestures we lose valuable time running for what we don't want ending up mad on those for whom we did the running. Who is to blame? We can blame society, norms, relatives, finances, time. We can blame everything else besides ourselves. Nobody is stopping you from not being part of holiday's madness. We have the power to choose. We can choose to create a gift with our own hands and make a postcard.
Handmade stuff might not look fancy, but it has something that few people give to their loved one now: time and full attention. Giving time to stores, to running and to promotions while our loved ones will get the tired, broke and grumpy Scrooge doesn't seem like the best strategy for love, not only in december, but overall. The year will pass, the money will always be gone, but the way you made people feel stays. Make someone feel that they're loved every day and you might spend less time, energy and money than what December makes you think.
