I believe it is as good as nothing. For a majority of people, one of the reasons why they are up and doing, breaking their limits and pushing themselves too hard is because they want to elevate their families and loved ones.
Truth be told, having family and friends at heart and ensuring that everything goes well for them is not wrong.
However, too much attention placed on them causing one to cross boundaries, neglecting merits and qualifications is wrong.
One of the problems we are having in the world today is strongly tied to nepotism. In a country like Nigeria, it is widely practiced that it has become a normal thing.
The man or woman who doesn't have people who are in higher positions in government or certain offices is left to suffer and completely rely on luck regardless of their merits and qualifications.
The system is so bad that people no longer apply for certain jobs because they already know that those in higher positions have hijacked those opportunities already for their loved ones.
This happens everywhere, even in the bank, a place where you willingly take your money to be protected for you. There are days that workers there prioritize their loved ones above other customers.
You will be in a queue for hours waiting to be attended to and all of a sudden, someone that came in late would be called by a staff member who happens to know them and attend to them leaving you in the queue.
Whenever I hear people complaining about lack of jobs and opportunities
I feel pity for their ignorance. There are several opportunities out there but those in charge either buy it for their loved ones or sell them out.
What hurts me the most is that they stress people to go out and seek those opportunities. People will risk their lives on the road and their little resources to ensure they don't miss those opportunities only to have the list out and their names won't be there.
Qualifications are no longer valued, no wonder we have unqualified and unprofessional people everywhere in the country working in places they shouldn't.
No matter one's love for their families, others should be considered too. And I am not against anyone coming through for their loved ones but they should also reward merit.
It's evil to give the opportunity that hundreds and thousands of people who are qualified, striving hard to get to someone who is not up to the task simply because he or she is your relation or friend.
So, if you ask me whether or not nepotism should be made a criminal offense, I will say it should.
This thing is too much. It's not only your loved ones that are in the world, people also need to survive , people also need that opportunity.
Those who are qualified should be rewarded, it should not be about family but about merit. If your loved ones are qualified, and the system is good without any form of corruption, I am certain that even if you don't bypass protocol to place them where they shouldn't be, they will eventually get there.
Why then encourage them to be lazy by making them skip the process? How will they value what they have since they didn't even work for it?
This thing is a grave offense, I wish there would be a strict law to deal with anyone caught practicing it.
Maybe until then, a lot of the challenges we are facing as a country, especially in the area of lack of jobs and opportunities, would be scrapped.
