Today I would like to write a bit about physical training and the role it plays in my life.
There has always been some form of training in my life. In high school, I practiced athletics for several years, with particular emphasis on gym exercises. I was doing quite well and I liked it very much, but my adventure with the sport in high school ended when I broke the cruciate ligament in the left knee.
In those days in Poland, doctors told me that I would never run and I would be happy if I could walk normally! Seriously!
Today I know that although the broken ligament is a big obstacle to overcome. However, with proper reconstruction and rehabilitation with specialists, you can easily return to sports.
After high school, studies began. In the first year, due to the problems after reconstruction of the ligament, I did not practice anything except sporadic push-ups, crunches, squats, etc.
Studies, therefore, began with parties and basically I was spending much time on them. At 3-4 year I started to move more. I went to various gyms, often the cheapest for financial reasons, of course. However, from today's perspective and what I experience during CrossFit, I know then I wasn't training hard enough. Among other things, because all the time I had in mind the words of doctors that my leg will never be fully recovered and I should always be very careful.
At the end of the 5th year, I also came back to running, after almost 6 years break! I just decided to leave and see how it goes. I started it with uncertainty and with a bad attitude. Now I know it should not be like that.
I was doing well, but at the same time, I did not get any pleasure from it.
After a few weeks, at an integration trip, I tore the cruciate ligament in my right knee. I immediately warn you that it had nothing to do with running. It was the result of my stupidity and alcohol... But about that, I will tell another time.
I was completely depressed, but my willingness to exercise and the joy of it was so great that this time I decided not to give up, do not listen to what doctors say to me and just after the swelling gone off I continued my workouts.
This time I trained completely without any weights, I did exercises from Paul Wade's books Convict Conditioning and I became interested in calisthenics.
By the way, I totally recommend this book for beginners.
I liked it very much and I was sure that I would not hurt myself without using heavy weights. I liked the training and learned a lot, but after some time they became very monotonous and I doesn't really felt it!
In the meantime, I moved to Edinburgh. A whole year I was still practicing a home workout without weights, using, among others: a pull-up bar, kettlebell and gymnastic rings.
I was exercise at home before or after work. Lack of proper space and exercise equipment was started to be quite irritating for me. I did not want to practice very early in the morning to not wake up my girlfriend and roommates. After work, on the other hand, I often did not have the motivation anymore because I was finding the last strength to spend a few hours learning programming.
And the day has only 24 hours!
And so I spent my first year in the UK. Between the time I was very interested in running. After reading Born to Run and Eat and Run, I decided that even if the world was going to collapse, I'm going back to running ...!
Soon I will write how it happened that from a person who with difficulty ran 10 minutes, in 6 months I came to 20 kilometers almost without effort and with a smile on my face :)
Please write whether you are training and what role it plays in your life! I would really like to hear your opinions on this subject!
Take care and see you soon!
