Some time ago I made a tour of an urban forest and found some trees with a lot of height, the trees corresponded to the species Ceiba pentandra, commonly known as "kapok", among those trees was another smaller tree, which corresponds to the species Sterculia apetala, commonly known as "Panama" tree.
In the following photograph the "Panama" tree is the one in the foreground, in which the simple leaves with foliar laminae characters with 3 to 5 lobes (lobed leaves) can be distinguished. The "kapok" trees are the ones in the background, which make it difficult to appreciate the "Panama" tree. A "kapok" tree can reach a height of 50 meters, while a "Panama" tree can reach 30 meters. Rarely is the "Panama" tree a dominant tree species.
I have written about these "kapok" trees in the same urban forest and you can see them by clicking here.
Sterculia apetala ("Panama" tree) is a tree that was formerly considered to be in the family Sterculiaceae, but was reordered and is now placed in the family Malvaceae. It is a tree native to the American continent, the species is present in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
This tree is found in dry, humid and very humid forests, also frequently in disturbed areas of secondary forests, that is, forests that after a natural or human disturbance regenerate through a natural process, and it is noteworthy that the type of vegetation and community in which it is found includes the gallery forest, which is a forest that is characterized by being linked to the banks of a river, even its preferred habitat is near the banks of rivers. Coincidentally, the tree in the photographs is located approximately 20 meters from the Cabriales River in Valencia (Carabobo state, Venezuela).
The main product obtained from the tree is a soft, white, medium quality wood that is used in the elaboration of canoes, boxes and also in rural constructions. From the sap is obtained a gum that has been used as a substitute for gum tragacanth, which is commonly used as an additive in the preparation of hair gels.
I comment that, in homemade medicine, the infusion of the leaves and bark has been used in the treatment of pulmonary affections and to attenuate the discomforts of the catarrh. Also, in homemade medicine, the crushed leaves and in poultice have been used as antirheumatic.
The tree had no flowers but I managed to see a fruit on top, the fruit was open and on the ground I found 2 fruits also open.
The fruit is composed of 4 or 5 obovoid follicles, similar to an egg but with the tip (apex) much wider than the base. When the fruit is ripe, these follicles open spontaneously (they are dehiscent fruits) dispersing their seeds.
Once opened, it is noticeable that their interior is covered with a dense layer of erect, stiff, yellowish hairs.
The seeds of 1 to 5 per follicle are edible and in some countries are roasted and ground to flavor chocolate or as a substitute for coffee; others use it as fodder for pigs.
Finally I comment that Sterculia apetala is the national tree of Panama and it is also the emblematic tree of the state of Carabobo, where I live.
The tree can be watched in a video I captured, as well as some seeds.
