Many years ago, I read several books about Jiddu Krishnamurti’s talks with the audiences who came to hear him, and it’s interesting to note that he didn’t write those books himself; rather, they are transcriptions of his talks (voice recordings converted to text). In one of these books, the idea that there are two worlds, the sociocultural world (created by humans) and the natural world (the macroworld and the microworld, stuck with me. The former ends up absorbing the latter and generally acts as a “screen” that prevents us from seeing nature.
The sociocultural world renders the natural world invisible in countless ways, for example, through “concrete screens” or “concrete jungles” and “pixel screens”; the latter include phones, computers, tablets, and televisions. Although we can see nature on “pixel screens,” our senses are limited to a two-dimensional frontal view in photographs and, if the video has audio, to hearing, whereas in three-dimensional nature, we can experience it not only through sight and hearing but also, for example, through smell the scent of damp soil or the fragrance of flowers and through touch the texture of tree bark, the pressure of the wind on the skin, or the ambient temperature; it is a multisensory experience.
It’s not a bad thing to learn about nature through “pixel screens” because it provides us with intellectual knowledge; what’s wrong is not having our own experiences in the natural world. Experiencing nature firsthand (as a way to step away from “pixel screens”) gives us a living understanding, which means that knowledge becomes tangible (it is perceived precisely through the senses) , it is something that is lived, activated through emotions such as curiosity and wonder, which, among other related emotions, heal the mental exhaustion caused by digital life, because “digital screens” passively drain our energy, while having our own experiences in the natural world actively restores it through a sense of biological and emotional well-being that anchors us to reality.
In the microworld of the natural world, I’ve had many experiences with animals, plants, and fungi. In this post, I’m going to discuss beetles of the genus Omophoita, beetles whose existence I would hardly have known about from “pixel screens,” but which I discovered by exploring the microworld of nature, and I was even able to connect them to other beetles I have found.
I hiked up a trail on one of the mountains in the “Filas de la Guacamaya Municipal Park,” located in Valencia (Carabobo, Venezuela), and made my way to a clearing at the top of the mountain. I didn’t capture a photograph that day showing the clearing, but since this isn’t the first time I have ascended up there, I’m sharing one image I took during one ascent, followed by a photograph taken during another, both captured almost in the same place but in different years. The difference in the vegetation is remarkable.
The day I was exploring the clearing, before I found a beetle, I remember it was early afternoon, and the surroundings alternated between direct sunlight and shade cast by clouds, the breeze was refreshing, and the air had a grassy smell.
Beetles of the genus Omophoita are taxonomically classified within the family Chrysomelidae, subfamily Galerucinae, tribe Alticini, and subtribe Oedionychina. The one I present below in two images was the first one I found in the clearing at the mountain top, among plants about 1 meter in height. The beetle is of the species Omophoita aequatorialis, which has two subspecies, aequatorialis and variabilis, and I believe it is likely the species Omophoita aequatorialis ssp. aequatorialis.
Previously, I must comment that, the Chrysomelidae family is one of the most diverse and abundant families of beetles. This family is characterized by species with highly variable body shapes, there are spherical and subcylindrical species, as well as those with shield-like, extended elytra. Some adults measure less than 1 millimeter, while others reach up to 27 millimeters.
To give an idea of the differences within the Chrysomelidae family, compared to the Omophoita genus shown here, below is an image of a species from the genus Oxychalepus.
I would like to point out that species of the genus Oxychalepus are characterized by their mimicry of beetles in the family Lycidae, such as species of the genus Calopteron, of which I show a photograph below.
I should clarify that the tribe Alticini was previously classified as the subfamily Alticinae (a sister subfamily of the subfamily Galerucinae), but years of phylogenetic research (including morphological and molecular studies) demonstrated that the subfamily Alticinae was not a sufficiently distinct group to warrant its own subfamily, and consequently, the demotion of the subfamily Alticinae to the tribe Alticini within the subfamily Galerucinae was subsequently formalized.
A few minutes later, among the same plants where I found the first beetle, I found the second beetle, which I believe is also the species Omophoita aequatorialis ssp. aequatorialis. I picked up that beetle and noticed that it wasn’t easy to handle, because it was pushing against my fingers with its legs to free itself; it even escaped and flew to a nearby branch, where I was able to capture an image of it. Following are four images of that beetle.
It should be noted that the adults of the Alticini tribe exhibit a wide variety of shapes, colors, and behaviors, and the species of the Oedionychina subtribe are among the largest, most colorful, and most striking. The genera of this subtribe are distributed throughout the New World, primarily in the Neotropical region. They are easily recognized by their smooth or confusingly dotted elytra, hind legs with generally well-developed femora, and a globose apical metatarsomer. Among the genera of the subtribe Oedionychina, species of the genus Omophoita are distributed primarily in Central and South America.
Beetles of the tribe Alticini (or alticines) are known as “flea beetles” because of their ability to jump, which is facilitated by a spring-like metafemoral structure in their enlarged hind femurs. In most alticines, the third segment (femur) of the hind legs is swollen or bulbous. This indicates the presence of a specialized internal anatomical structure called the metafemoral spring (Maulik’s organ), which stores and releases elastic energy for jumping. The fourth segment (tibia) is usually widened at the tip, and there may be a small tooth or spur at the tip to provide traction for the explosive launch.
In general, alticine beetles are small to medium (or moderate) in size, with most measuring between 2 and 10 millimeters in long, but the world’s largest “flea beetle,” the species Podontia lutea, measures about 2 centimeters in long.
It is also worth noting that alticines are highly specialized phytophagous insects. In both the adult and larval stages, they feed on stems, leaves, or roots, and rarely on flowers, of nearly all families of higher plants. Most alticines species are highly specialized and feed primarily on plants from the families Solanaceae, Cruciferae, Resedaceae, Capparidaceae, Verbenaceae, Labiatae, and Asteraceae. Although all “flea beetles” are phytophagous, feeding primarily on higher plants, some genera within the tribe specialize in ferns or mosses, and there are also some found in leaf litter and humus.
With regard to the habits of “flea beetles” during their immature stages, these vary considerably. Eggs are laid on the plant or in the soil. Larvae feed on roots, mine leaves, or feed openly on them. Among “flea beetles,” there are also fruit borers and stem borers. In the case of larvae that feed on exposed leaves (species of the genera Altica and Podontia), the eggs are laid in clusters on the leaves. Pupation generally occurs in the soil, with rare exceptions. Feeding on flowers is uncommon, but feeding on pollen is common among members of certain genera.
I have already shown two beetles of the species Omophoita aequatorialis, but in reality, in my experience, I found a third beetle among the same plants, the one shown in the image below, which appears to be the other subspecies, Omophoita aequatorialis ssp. variabilis.
To appreciate the differences in the coloration patterns of the three beetles I found, I made the following composite image.
On the other hand, my experiences with the Omophoita genus are not limited just to that clearing at the top of a mountain, because the first time I saw one of those beetles was in my house's yard four years before I saw the ones in the mountain clearing. That day I was in the yard when suddenly I felt something touch my arm, and when I looked, I saw it was the beetle, so I photographed it (I didn't find it, the beetle found me). When I was researching the species of that beetle, I thought it probably belonged to the genus Omophoita or the genus Alagoasa, and I even went so far as to think it was the species Alagoasa decemguttata, but later, after uploading the photograph to iNaturalist, a curator suggested that it was from the genus Omophoita. Below is a photograph of that beetle.
It is important to mention that some species of the genera Alagoasa and Omophoita mimic one another. Among these mimics are the species Omophoita octoguttata, Alagoasa pantina, Alagoasa scissa, and Alagoasa areata, all of which have a very similar elytra configuration. Likewise, Alagoasa equestris is similar to Omophoita communis and Omophoita equestris in the morphology of its elytra, and it seems likely that Alagoasa equestris is, in fact, Omophoita communis.
I commented that I found beetles in a mountain clearing and in my yard, the mountain is abundance of a natural world, and my yard, although it is a small-scale ecosystem (microworld), belongs to the sociocultural world because I live in a city, and although in cities one can find microecosystems in urban forests, gardens, and urban parks, they ultimately belong to the sociocultural world. In this regard, the air contains both positively and negatively charged ions. In cities, heavy traffic and a lack of vegetation, among other variables, cause severe air pollution that reduces the number of negative ions and leads to a predominance of positive ions, which are harmful to health. High levels of positive ions have harmful effects. An abundance of positive ions causes a serotonin overdose (a neurotransmitter and hormone involved in the stress response) in humans, leading to hyperactivity, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, and aggression. An excess of positive ions significantly increases the risk of developing or worsening asthma, bronchitis, and allergies, and has also been linked to headaches, muscle pain, nausea, and a constant feeling of drowsiness or physical exhaustion. On the other hand, negative ions predominate in nature; they are generated by processes such as sunlight, lightning, ocean waves, and waterfalls, among other factors. Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, which results in greater alertness, reduced drowsiness, and increased mental energy. High levels of negative ions in the air have beneficial effects on people, such as a greater sense of relaxation and a reduction in fatigue, stress levels, irritability, depression, and tension. The scientific literature is very extensive on these aspects; one study can be read by clicking here.
In addition to the previous paragraph, it should be added that constant exposure to environmental electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi, phones and computers, causes the human body to constantly accumulate an excess of positive ions on its surface and in its tissues. In cities, or rather at home, to reduce the excess of positive ions, they must be neutralized by introducing negative ions. Similar to exposure in natural aquatic environments, such as waterfalls, ocean waves, and heavy rain, which release large amounts of negative ions due to water molecules colliding with hard surfaces (the Lenard effect), the water spray from a home shower generates a similar effect on a smaller scale, releasing negative ions into the bathroom air that help relax the body. Likewise, it should be noted that, the human body accumulates positive charges due to wearing shoes with rubber or plastic soles (which act as insulators), as well as, through constant contact with electronic devices, and when walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as soil or grass, the body acts as a conductor and balances itself with the electrical potential of our planet, because the Earth has a predominantly negative electrical charge.
In general, this post makes it clear that turning our backs on the natural world is not an option; we need to experience it more often and, as a result, reduce the number of hours we spend looking at “pixel screens.” Choosing direct contact with nature over the constant use of “pixel screens” is, among other things, a healthy decision, because doing so on a daily basis helps protect, maintain, or improve physical, mental, and emotional health. This healthy decision is characterized by its sustainability over time and gradually becomes a way of life.
