Well... my oldest daughter has come up with her very first self developed substitution cipher. It's not quite at the NIST level of security... but I'm still happy that somehow, she had come up with the idea. It's the sort of thing that I would do when I was younger... I'm kind of curious where she got the inspiration from though, probably a TV show or something like that. It's a little incomplete... or maybe I don't understand how the cipher works fully.
Needless to say, like most substitution ciphers... it was a pretty painfully slow thing to do by hand... but we had fun making up messages for each other that her sister and mother couldn't read! Well... for her sister, she wouldn't have been able to read it even if it was in cleartext!
I do try a little bit subtly (or not so subtly...) to edge her into some interest in science and Maths... but this time it really wasn't my doing!... but if she continues to be curious about these things, I'm more than happy to oblige!
...on the other hand... this was the same child who recently chose to get a Rainbow Poop cushion from everything that was on offer at a Science museum....
