[ENG-ESP] 馃拰I sent a letter for the first time in my life
The other day my cousin and I were talking about the endearing amusement we feel when our mothers or our grandmother mistakenly send a message to the group chat, or send an empty voice note, or a document they wanted to print because they didn't know how else to do it, or when they post messages on their statuses or stories that were meant to be sent privately to a contact. We also reflected on how hard it is for us to explain some of the new smartphone features to them, as sometimes they are new to us as well, even though we are already 30 years old.
Then we stopped to reflect on how we shouldn't laugh at them when they make these small mistakes, because nowadays most young people don't even know how to write and send a letter, something that for previous generations was very basic knowledge everyone had to know how to put into practice.
A while ago I joined a long-distance book club where some of the girls suggested that every so often we should send letters to each other to get to know each other better, since we live far away from one another. The dynamic is that every couple of months a draw is held to assign a penpal for each of us. I participated for the first time this month, and just yesterday I sent my little letter, which was the first letter I have sent in my entire life.
And why had I never sent a letter? I don't know, I just never needed to. I remember once, many years ago, I sent my documents by regular mail to the university so I could enroll, and doing that paperwork felt like a hassle. I also remember that when I was little, a postman would occasionally come by the house, but the envelopes he left were utility bills or documents. I don't even have any memories of my grandmother receiving a letter, because telephones and faxes already existed, so what I do remember is when my grandmother would ask us to look up someone in the thick Yellow Pages book.
But now the practice of sending letters is returning to use even among young people, and especially among those of my generation, which is very nostalgic. Because we had to live through the transition between the analog and digital worlds, the excess of virtual life now makes us want to experience more intimate ways of communicating.
Indeed, that is how I felt about the experience of preparing and sending this letter: like a process you can get involved in on a deeper level due to the time and care it requires, very different from simply sending a WhatsApp message. So, if you have never used the medium of sending letters, or if you haven't done it in many years because it is no longer necessary, I invite you to do it with your friends or loved ones who live far away, or with anyone you want, since the very fact that it isn't necessary makes the experience of sending or receiving a letter all the more special.

Y 驴Por qu茅 nunca hab铆a enviado una carta? No lo s茅, nunca hab铆a necesitado hacerlo.
