I've been experiencing some things as I grow older, and those things made me understand and, at the same time appreciate my parents. While I was still small, well, I never had that understanding. The only thing I know how to do is to complain and make whatever my request is known to them. There's just to find a way to solve it, to attend to me, to provide to do what they're supposed to do. I don't even ask them how they're doing it, how they're able to come through, or even thank them enough.
But now that I'm growing older and thinking about having a family someday too, I can't help but wonder how to go about it. Because even as a single guy, huhm... I'm still trying to make ends meet; not to talk of when I now have a family of my own. It is now that I know and understand that my parents too didn't have it all; they were just doing their best too. It is now that I now remember those times when things were very tight, but they would still make sure that we eat, that they sort out school bills, and that they provided for every one of our needs. We didn't say because things are tight for them, then we will refuse to be hungry, nah. It still came all the same; responsibilities still showed up even though things are tight.
I think I understand better now, or that I'm not understanding them better now. You know, as kids then, we don't even want to hear, "No." We're always concerned about what we wanted, whereas they had a lot of things they needed to do, a lot of things to put into consideration before spending even a kobo; we didn't understand that then.
But these days, when I find myself calculating, planning, and budgeting, then I imagine my kid walking up to me with a request that isn't in my plan or that's even worth it, how would I respond to it, knowing fully well that what I have isn't enough to cater for what I've planned, not to talk of now listening and doing his/her bidding?
I just pray it is easy for me and that it is easy for us all. Because now I know and can see better. Our parents were never lazy, even when we began to grow and were inside school, and they told us to not waste things, to manage what we have, to try and bear with them, or that they would see to something before the weekend.... I understand it all now.
No one is perfect; my parents aren't, nor am I. But the older I get, the more I appreciate their effort. They are also a work in progress; that is why there are things they like every other person or parent's feel they had done better or differently. But then, this is life, and we all have learned. They are parents; it doesn't make them a superhero who has answers to everything and can tackle anything. They are just humans; they are just two people living and doing their best with whatever it is they had.
