It is well said that after the storm comes the calm. Last night there was heavy rain that caused flooding in several areas of Bilbao, so when I was thinking about my walk today I didn't know whether to take a different route, even though walking near the Estuary is exactly what I like to do. But when I left the house, around noon, I found a radiant day and people on the street eager to enjoy it. Anyway, I took the metro to go down to the city center, thinking that some streets might still be closed due to last night's contingency.

When I arrived at the Casco Viejo, almost everything had been cleaned up and there were many people walking and many shops open. I went towards the Paseo del Arenal to see if there was anything left of the Sunday flea market, and there was more than I thought! From the square I began to notice the scent of flowers, and I saw several people returning with their bouquets, so I hurried over and found quite a few book, gift, jewelry, and flower stalls open. I walked around there for a while, enjoying the good Sunday atmosphere by the estuary as always. I also took the opportunity to buy a little gift for a girl I'll be doing a letter exchange with this month.

On the way back, I did venture through the small streets, and look at everything I found.

Some streets, specifically those leading to the Mercado de la Ribera, were still under repair.

I felt relieved to know that despite the rains and flooding, there wasn't much serious damageโ€”at least in this areaโ€”and to see that the authorities set to work to clean the streets quickly. I know that the people who live on that particular street and those who suffered damage to their shops must still be distressed, but at least the situation is being resolved relatively quickly. It should be like that everywhere, at the very least. Although I know that in Spain there are also many problems, in my mind I can't help but compare the way governments here (the Basque Country is what I know and they say it has some of the best administrations) deal with these types of situations, and how in my country the people suffer so much because nothing works well; I just can't help but think about it.

Returning to the positive side of this day, even though right now I'm ending it lying here in bed going through the symptoms of a migraine attack (I know, I've mentioned on many Sundays that I get an attack right on that day), I want to thank you for stopping by my blog, and wish you that always, no matter what happens on bad days, of storm and rain, the sun will always come out again for you. Now to sleep, good night.

Ahora a dormir, buenas noches
