Late last year, my wife and I recorded a "demo" CD for our group Apeiron Baroque that we started when we returned back to Australia a few years ago... it was mostly so that we would have a way of showing festival and concert organisers what we were. And we went the old fashioned route... sound for music... instead of a fancy video.

Now, we both think that recorded music is a bit of an anomaly that is a bit against the spirit of what music should be... a live shared experience between audience and performers. But we can constantly rage about the artificiality of most recordings (knowing what happens behind the scenes...)... or we can just produce recordings that capture the ethos of what we think music is... even if it is frozen into a recording.

.. and what do we think? Well, the "threat" of being frozen makes musicians tend to play more conservatively... and also in a way that is least "offensive"... a sort of middle ground... and then there is the trap of perfection, where every last detail gets worked over in post-production and editing until the result is a Frankenstein monster of stitched edits. And then people are surprised that groups in live concerts don't sound anything like their recordings...

So, we wanted a "demo" that sounded like one of our concerts... and so we played each piece as full takes 5-8 times, in a sort of whatever happens happens manner... with improvisation and risks with timing and ensemble... the same as what we did for our concerts.

And in production and editing... we wanted only large sections and NO small edits. And in the end, each piece was generally one edit, with some being complete with no edits at all... There were two much longer pieces that did have 4 edits... and all of the edits were just large sections from the full takes being spliced together.

So, the recording sounds "live"... and it sounds like us!

... and after much deliberation, we decided to release it. Streaming on all major streaming music platforms... just google "Apeiron Baroque" in your music streaming program and it should pop up!

Or the embedded player below (via Spotify)

Bandcamp and digital direct sales coming in this month... and we will get the physical CD stuff up at some point.

YAY!
