There's less than a week to go until the 24th, and it's common to feel our hearts begin to beat differently in the days leading up to it, a jumble of emotions we can't always describe, that we don't always know how to express... It's the rhythm of saying goodbye to the year that has passed, the anticipation of being with family on this special day. More than the approach of the date marked on the calendar and in our memories, there's an echo in these days that runs much deeper: the certainty that the true gift is family, family in all its forms. That's the real gift of that night, and it's one we sometimes underestimate.

December 24th is much more than Christmas Eve. In many countries, it's the moment when tradition and family gather around a table to share, perhaps for the only time all year, the same meal, the same conversations, the same wishes for a good year ahead. On that day, homes are filled with voices, laughter, and the aroma of dishes that evoke all sorts of memories. It's the gathering that reminds us that, although time passes and distances between hearts grow, there's always a place, even if not physical, to return to, a place where we feel safe.

On that day, it's the little ones who, with their renewed innocence, truly illuminate the night, brighter than any tree lights. In this joy, for lights, sweets, and gifts, seen with sparkling eyes, we discover the purity of what this day means: it's hope and wishes for happiness. The little ones teach us that the magic lies beyond the gifts; it's in the anticipation, the surprise, and the wonder of believing.

On this day, those who are far away, those who couldn't be here, are also part of the table, even if only through silence, or through a call that cuts out due to poor reception or tears. Distance can never erase what's forgotten, which is why in every toast we feel the presence of those who couldn't be here, and in every melancholic sigh, a kiss and a hug escape for them. Because family isn't measured in kilometers, it's measured in thoughts of one another.

And of course, we can't forget those who have no family, those who face the night alone with an emptiness that's difficult to fill, with a wait that never ends. That's why I believe this day is an invitation for us all to open our arms and our hearts, so that at least one less person finds the 24th a painful reminder, so that we understand that Christmas isn't just for those who share a last name, but for anyone who needs human warmth and peace in their heart.

There is nothing sadder than spending this night in absolute silence, without a voice calling to us, without a hug to envelop us, without even a phone call to remind us that we exist. For those who spend the 24th like this, it is neither a celebration nor a source of hope; sadly, what should be joy becomes a cruel mirror reflecting their profound loneliness. In this silence, absence is the cry that no one hears, and the brightest night of the year becomes the darkest.

The week before the 24th is undoubtedly a time of preparation for the anticipated night, but it is also a time for reflection. It reminds us that life is fragile, that hugs should not be postponed until a special occasion, and that true wealth lies in the moments shared with others. Because that moment of a full table, hands clasped, and tears mingled with smiles is when we understand that family (whether by blood or by choice) is the greatest miracle to celebrate.

One week before the 24th... and I already want everything to be bathed in light, for everyone to find a reason to be grateful in life, a face to love, and a memory to cherish because that's what will remain in the end, not the gifts, not the parties. May this date be just that: a call to open our hearts, so that we never feel alone, even if we're not at the table that day.
