Yesterday I broke my watch, the very moment I stepped into the drab, faded train station. I had been a prisoner of these hands for over 20 years, ever since it arrived disguised as a gift, along with my graduation diploma, in a small blue box that smelled of promises. Although the box was beautiful and fragrant, I knew I was a prisoner from the moment it fit perfectly on my wrist; from that moment on, it wouldn't let me be free. It accompanied me everywhere, whispering its tick-tock, and with each sound, my heartbeat synchronized to a rhythm that wasn't mine, a rhythm that wasn't natural.
Yesterday I broke my watch, and for a moment I felt sad, for a moment I thought about how much it would cost to repair or replace it. I looked at the shattered crystal, I looked at the detached hand, I sighed. Then a feeling I didn't recognize came over me; my heartbeat slowed, and my mind cleared. There was a feeling on my wrist that I couldn't decipher; something was missing, but at the same time it was okay that it was missing, because for a few hours I was free again, until I remembered that I had a watch on my phone.
