The Exam - A Narrative

Ana hated school—she hated it with all her might. But what she loathed most, amidst the clamor of dirty, foul-smelling children and adults who reeked of tobacco and coffee, were the exams. Those two long, impatient hours of stillness, during which she was forced to remain pinned against the back of her chair. That was when the torture began: writing and writing, without the faintest idea of what to write. Ana never understood what she was supposed to do; the questions on that terrifying, blank white sheet of paper all blurred together, resembling some endless, tangled tongue-twister.

The worst part of the exams came later, at home, when she had to endure a humiliating ritual before her parents: showing them a big, fat zero—scrawled in blood-red ink. Then came the scoldings, one after another. Her father would accuse her of being irresponsible, while her mother would weep and shout—sometimes cursing her daughter’s lack of interest, other times questioning the teacher’s competence.

Ana was exhausted by this cycle of poor grades, reprimands, and the sight of that red pen drawing a zero. So, she prepared herself, over and over again, determined to achieve the best possible result on her upcoming science exam. It was a simple test: given a list of ten animals: horse, cat, frog, hummingbird, flea, lion, dragonfly, shark, butterfly, and dog. Ana had to describe one of them. Even for Ana, this would be a simple exam; she knew all these animals well and could describe them in a flash or so she thought, failing to account for the requirement that each description had to be at least 600 words long. "That’s a huge amount," Ana thought, leaning back on her bed. She needed a plan. She remembered the large illustrated encyclopedia in her father’s study and went to get it; it contained extensive descriptions of every single animal. Ana prepared ten sheets of paper, one for each animal, with a detailed text of over 600 words for each. "That’s like a million words in total; I’ll never be able to learn all this!" Tears welled up in Ana’s eyes. Then, an imaginary lightbulb flickered on above her head: "I don’t have to learn about every single animal, I only need to learn one: the flea, since it’s the smallest." Ana read the page about the flea over and over until she could recite it from memory, effortlessly.

The day of the exam arrived, and Ana felt more prepared and confident than ever. "I’m ready; I’ll get the best grade!" This time, her seat felt soft and comfortable. The teacher went around to each student, handing out an exam sheet that contained only the name of an animal. When Ana saw which animal she had been assigned, her heart nearly stopped: the lion. Ana sighed and began to write: The lion is an animal... it is the king of the jungle; it has fur, and in that fur, it surely has fleas, a flea being an insect about 3 mm long, with a thick, reddish-black body and no wings, equipped with very strong, long hind legs that allow it to take great leaps. It lives as a parasite on mammals and birds, feeding on their blood and causing them irritating bites...

When the exam results came back, Ana received another red zero, but not like the last time. This time, the teacher had been truly impressed by the precise description of the flea and Ana’s eloquent phrasing, so she called her in to retake the exam. "This time, Ana, you just need to focus on the topic; you can't lose sight of the central idea," the teacher said. Ana was handed another sheet of paper with the name of an animal on it. Deep down, she prayed it would be the flea again, but when she turned it over, she read: "The Shark." Ana shrugged and began to write: The shark is a fish; it lives in the water and has large teeth. It doesn't have fur, but if it did have fur, it would surely have fleas, an insect about 3 mm long, with a thick, reddish-black body and no wings, equipped with very strong, long hind legs that allow it to take great leaps. It lives as a parasite on mammals and birds, feeding on their blood and causing them irritating bites...
