I arrived at Ecency without knowing what a blockchain was, and in a way, I'm still here. Sometimes I think I know, and other times I don't, but I know I'm not going anywhere. I confess that when a friend told me about Hive and especially Ecency, I was skeptical, not because I was struggling in the digital world or because I liked to write, for years I ran a blog on Google that I updated regularly, but because of all the technology behind it, all the things that were new to me: cryptocurrencies, NFTs, cryptos, the Hive Curation Wallet, voting, it was all new to me.
"What are you talking about?" I asked him. "Well, I'll help you," he said.
I'm good with computers but not with the internet, but it only took a few days to understand how everything worked. Besides, I could write from my phone, and then he could help me publish or wait until we were together to work out how things looked, the photos I would use, I do almost all of that myself now. My relationship with technology is cordial, but I still occasionally solve problems with a little tap. From the computer to the refrigerator.
One afternoon, I had my phone ready, and he showed me how to create beautiful images to illustrate my writing, a technology that was unimaginable in my day. He created my account, and I trusted him to manage it, as I do for many things, not only financial but also for my online security. "More than a friend, it's a personal gesture," I joke.
My username couldn't be anything other than the one I used for my blog, although there was a certain air of pretension in proclaiming myself a poet when I'm nothing more than a wannabe writer. I knew the photo would be the same. "I'm old school, one of those who still value their privacy," I told him, laughing. "I don't think anyone needs to see this wrinkled face." We both laughed.
The first few days I just focused on reading and writing a short introduction, which received both positive and negative feedback. Then I shared my first poems, some I had written a while ago. Gradually, I added people I'd like to sit down with for coffee one afternoon. I added people who commented on my posts or those who wrote beautiful poetry. I started by commenting tentatively, first with short comments, then more heartfelt ones.
The Writing community came into my hands, and I started writing stories. I received a lot of feedback, which encouraged me to keep writing. I think that's when I discovered my true passion: writing stories. And I've written a lot on The Ink Well, some things I'm very happy with, others not so much.
It's incredibly satisfying to see the Ecency app notifications piling up on my phone, to read the comments when they're insightful or when they offer advice, especially about my poetry. It has definitely lived up to my expectations.
I can't really explain how it all works, and I know Hive is bigger than Ecency, but I think Ecency is undoubtedly an important and unique part of Hive. For me, the blue of Ecency represents stories, both written and yet to be written, waiting to be read and discussed.
Hive's rewards are an incentive, but what if it disappeared tomorrow? I would still write. There's something beautiful about being rewarded for your writing, for the time you spend writing, but there's also something beautiful in the act of writing itself. There's something that current social media platforms don't offer: the peace of writing a long piece of writing, and then having people, sometimes only looking for material things, come and read it, comment on it, and interact with it. Perhaps Ecency, or Hive, is a cure for the loneliness of many. Maybe it's for older, slower souls, those who fear Facebook and Instagram.
I just want to publish and have someone actually read it, and if they have the time, tell me, "Improve your comma placement," or "I liked how that character died," even better, in my opinion.
There's something I still don't understand about ownership and the immortality of what's written here. Honestly, I don't care if it leaves my body and lives on online forever. I like the idea of my writing being in a place where everyone can access it, even when I'm gone.
My advice if you're like me: If you're one of those people who gets scared by new things, by strange words like blockchain and wallet, find a friend like mine who can teach you with patience and love. Thank you if you're reading this. But don't stop writing, and above all, write with essence. Blessings.
Bendiciones.
