The money I picked and returned to the owner: even though I was broke.

A true life story back in my university days.

I was very broke.
Yes, like counting 100 naira to decide between garri and transport broke.
My stipend was late. My roommate owed me. My phone was off because I couldn’t avoid to pay money and charge it.

One afternoon after a lecture, I was walking through the school gate with my head down, doing mental maths on how to survive the week.
That’s when I saw a bundle of cash.

A small black purse, lying by the gutter.
I picked it up.

Inside was a bundle of cash. I mean a lot of it.
Student ID card. ATM card. National identity card.

My heart did two things at once.
Part of me whispered, God has answered. This is your rent. This is food for two months.
The other part whispered louder, that is someone’s school fees. That is someone’s money.

I sat on a bench when I got home and stared at it for ten minutes.
I was hungry. I had financial challenges stacked up. No one would have known if I kept it.

But I also remembered something my late mom told me, David money you didn’t work for will work against you.

So I used the phone number in one of the id cards.
The voice on the other end was panicking. It was a 300L girl. Her school fees balance. She had dropped it running to catch a bus according to her.

We met at the gate. When I handed it to her, she broke down and hugged me.
She tried to give me five thousand naira from the money for my honesty.
I said no.
She insisted on buying me food instead. That plate of rice that day tasted like victory, yes and I enjoyed it.

I didn’t get rich that day. My problems didn’t disappear.
But I slept that night with a peace that no amount of money could buy.

Years later, I still think about that purse.
Not because I was tempted.
But because that was the day I chose who I wanted to be even when I had nothing.

Integrity is expensive when you’re broke.
But it pays interest for a lifetime.
