Street Art #558 Scribe, Montreal

This year, I saw several murals done by Montreal artist Scribe. So it was time to do a post on this artist. The first works I saw were more lettering in a very cool style and then he moved on to more figurative works in a more strange style. Let me know what you think.

"L'art subtil de s'en foutre" ("The subtle art of not giving a damn") was created in the alley behind the Livart, a cultural center located on Saint-Denis street in Montreal. The center often invites artists to paint murals in this alley. This wasn't the case this year. But since his work was tagged, Scribe decided to do a new one.

Scribe is a self-taught street artist, member of the CSX crew, with roots in France and Spain. Now based in Montreal, he appropriates the walls to reveal their poetry. His works are placed where people don't look, he prefers the sensitive rather than the obvious. The CSX crew (Chômeurs Sans eXpérience - Unemployed Without eXperience) was founded by Zoer, French artist born in Silicy in the 80's, and Kryo in 2004 in order to discover more cultures and artists from all around the world.

The Mask, 2017

While walking through the alleys for the Canettes de Ruelle, I spotted this mural done in 2017 by the artist in a private backyard. The owners were having a hot tub installed in their backyard, the wooden fence in the back had been removed to allow the hot tub and equipment to pass through. Unique opportunity to take 2 photos otherwise the work is not visible from the alley.

I really like the lettering. And the rest of the work is great with many details.

Still in the same neighborhood, there was also this shed painted by Scribe over a work done by the Lama Brothers during the 2020 edition of the Canettes de Ruelle festival (a work I missed 😢). I had no luck with the sun but you can see on the sunny side a part of the old work.

And just because it's always worth zooming in on Scribe's murals, always full of fun details to notice like this little turtle carrying a tiny house or this frog with two heads. This artist has a really strange universe, always fun to explore. Here are two pictures to admire the work in close-up.
