Being able to say what we think, what we feel and demand our rights is an essential part of freedom and it is our duty as parents to teach our children to raise their voices when necessary. So the slogan is "Let your voice be heard!"

Happy day #motherhood friends, from this little place in the world I send you a big greeting wishing you all the best. Today I wanted to share with you a topic that has been on my mind for a while due to different situations that my children have gone through this year, but for one reason or another I had been putting it off and that topic is none other than the importance of teaching our children to let their voices be heard.

It is very common for us parents to silence our children when they intervene in an adult conversation to give their opinion because "when adults talk, children shut up ", that is what our parents used to tell us and it was a lesson we learned very well and now in our role as parents we pass it on to our children.

"You don't talk back to adults, you don't contradict them. You obey them " that was another phrase with which they used to silence us many times at home, completely annulling our right to express ourselves and express something as simple as our opinion or dislike of a situation and that and other similar phrases were commonly used by our parents because to do otherwise was bad manners.

That is how we grew up believing that children's opinions were not relevant and that they were not allowed to refuse or object to any request or order from an adult and I must confess that many times I found myself telling my children that they could not intervene in the conversations of adults.

And the fact is that many times raising our voice to demand our rights or defend what we believe is fair is taken as rebellion, disobedience or lack of respect, but teaching our children to be quiet is a complete mistake and I realized that a few years ago and I changed my speech completely.

And in that sense I have explained to my children that yes, obviously you have to respect, and not only adults, but everyone. But respecting others does not imply accepting mistreatment, offenses, abuse of authority or injustice because that is simply unacceptable and that is when they should let their voice be heard, always with respect, of course.

It happened many times that some of my children came home complaining about something their grandmother told them or about some attitude of a classmate or teacher and my first reaction was to ask "and you, what did you say?

Their answers most of the time were "nothing, I didn't say anything " and again I would ask "and if you didn't agree, why did you keep quiet? " and at this point they would just shrug their shoulders and that was when I started to realize that this was the result of all the times I asked them to keep quiet when they wanted to give their opinion about something or when they complained about something that for them was unfair.

Unconsciously or rather wrongly I was programming them to shut up and accept and there is nothing more dangerous than that, especially if you are a child and on top of that you end up being a complacent adult for fear of raising your voice.

And when I say "raise your voice " I don't mean yelling, I mean opening our mouth to respectfully make clear our position or opinion about something in particular and not end up giving in and doing something we don't want or accepting inadequate treatment.

So in the face of their complaints I started to say "you have a mouth, USE IT. If you don't agree with something, say so, if you think the teacher was wrong, say so, if you don't like the way they talk to you, say so, if you feel you are not treated well, SAY SO. Whoever you are, don't be silent. Let your voice be heard".

And I must say that even though Matias is the oldest, he has a hard time asserting himself and still brings complaints from time to time, but Miranda doesn't hold anything back. She even throws her complaints at her dad and me, which I definitely applaud her for, because that's exactly what I want her to do. That she doesn't keep quiet and she definitely doesn't do that.

Some time ago I told you in a post that in the orchestra she was assigned a piece for a concert and for not practicing enough they put her to play with the younger ones, but she did not keep quiet, although she knew it had been for lack of practice she asked for another chance and the teacher gave it to her and that was a source of pride for me.

She did not come to me to complain because she would be changed to another group, nor did she ask me to talk to the teacher. She opened her mouth and solved the problem. And many things like that have happened that show me that she is learning what she is being taught at home and putting it into practice.

Another experience that surprised me a lot was on her first day of classes of this new school year in which the coordinator went to take her out of her classroom to take her to another section to which she had been changed arbitrarily and without notifying us of the change, so when Miranda arrived at school she went to the section where all her classmates were, since she was not aware of anything.

So when I asked her to enter the other classroom, Miranda immediately informed her that this was not her classroom and that her mother had not told her that she had been changed and despite the insistence of the coordinator Miranda refused to enter and asked them to call me, so I immediately went to the school and I was able to solve the situation.

Finally it was all a confusion of the institution but if Miranda had not defended her position in spite of being the coordinator, the story "maybe " would have been different. And I say "maybe " because Miranda's mother has a master's degree in not keeping quiet about anything and surely the next day she would have gone to the school to solve the situation.

But the fact that she, a 9 year old girl, took her position in that way makes me happy, because I know that no one will go over her head and as we say here "she doesn't eat size ". She asks, speaks, claims and defends herself. She raises and lets her voice be heard whenever necessary.

With Matías it is still a learning process since his personality is very different from Miranda's, who is extroverted and doesn't know the word "grief ". On the other hand, Matias is a very shy child and finds it very difficult to confront (so to speak) third parties. Be it classmates, teachers, etc.

But on several occasions he left the grief and complained about a grade with which he was not satisfied and now that he is in high school I try to make him do the same so that in a respectful way he addresses his teachers when he is not satisfied with something as well as with his classmates and I know that it is a battle that we will win because every day at home we reinforce his self-esteem, his self-confidence and encourage him to make himself heard without any fear.

So at home we change the "quiet is prettier " for "let your voice be heard ", something that will serve them not only now but in their adult life and although it is a process that may take time we will continue working on it.

And for a change, I've already written a lot, so I'll say goodbye. Kisses and blessings!

Besitos y bendiciones!
