Giving gifts to people can be a workload–for me at least. This has to do with the fact that thoughtfulness is always put into these gifts. I do not just walk into a store, grab anything from the shelf and ship it to the person in question. There is a period of thinking, weighing options, putting the person's likes and dislikes on the table and most especially, weighing your pocket.
Gifting minimalists can be a tad bit easier not because they are minimalists but because they understand the essence of simplicity and thoughtfulness.
The list can be endless when it comes to gifts for minimalists. Immediately I saw the prompt for this week, I had a thousand and one gift ideas in mind. Gifts that are not too ostentatious but simple. Simple and unique.
I know for a fact that if I'm to give a minimalist gift, I would go for something very unique. I wouldn't give something that everyone on the block has. That just takes away the thoughtfulness and uniqueness from the gift.
I remember randomly ranting to a good friend about how much I needed a versatile bag as the one I had was wearing out. It was a very random and somewhat irrelevant discussion but fast forward to a few months later, on my birthday, I got a very beautiful white bag. I loved it!
The fact that my rant didn't go in vain and the fact that the friend actually remembered what I needed contributed more towards the love I had for the bag.
Someone once told me that giving gifts to people cannot be so hard as they usually give subtle hints during discussions and if we listen closely, we would get the hint.
Although I have a few options, I would mention one for both the male and female category.
For Ladies
A simple handbag would do, in a plain colour(black, white, beige) preferably. I know that females like things that can be multipurpose.
A handbag is a really important thing that ladies need to have but many do not like purchasing. Take myself for example, I have a couple of bags but a majority of them were given to me as gifts. I wouldn't willingly step out to go bag shopping but I would totally love to get it as a gift.
For Gentlemen
Just like with women, with men, the intention always matters. However, a classic yet wrist watch could make do. I've come to learn that some men like having things on their wrists; it could be a bracelet, a wristwatch or anything as long as it sits on their wrists.
These are a few gifts that could be given to a friend on a good day but in the end, gifting people especially minimalists has a lot to do with specificity.
So in summary, while searching for a birthday gift for a minimalist, be very intentional and specific, take flexibility of the gift into consideration and also keep it simple.
