A lot of people fear fat, and while a low fat diet is the best for most people a diet completely devoid of fat can actually kill you. We need fats for a variety of things one of them being the absorption of vitamins and minerals. As vegan I get my fats from nuts seeds, oils i put in my salads and my most beloved go to the Avocado.
Avocados are not vegetables as some people think they are actually a fruit.
Avocados are nutritionally amazing they provide nearly 20 essential nutrients. Fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins and folic acid to mention a few.
here is a breakdown of the nutrition facts of 1/3 of an avocado which is considered a portion (although really who eats just on third of an avocado? SHOW YOURSELVES!!!)
Total Sugars 0g -Protein 1g-Vitamin D 0mcg -Calcium 10mg -Iron 0.3mg Potassium 250mg -Vitamin A 0mcg -Vitamin C 4mg -Vitamin E 1mg -Vitamin K 11mcg -Thiamin 0.04mg -Riboflavin 0.1mg -Niacin 1mg -Vitamin B6 0.1mg
-Folate (0mcg folic acid) 45mcg DFE -Pantothenic Acid 0.7mg -Phosphorus 30mg
-Magnesium 15mg -Zinc 0.3mg -Copper 0.1mg -Manganese 0.1mg
Besides all the goodness within as fat they naturally enable the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha and beta-carotene and lutein, in any foods you eat together with them.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States animal fats are heavily implicated in this so choosing our friend the Avocado instead can actually help maintaining heart health.
The American Heart Association (AHA) Dietary Guidelines recommend a diet that has at least five servings of fruits and vegetables, contains up to 30% of calories from fats (primarily unsaturated) and is low in saturated fat, cholesterol, trans fats and sodium while being rich in potassium. Avocados can help you meet the AHA dietary guidelines because they have both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat and contain potassium. Choose avocado I tell you - GO Team AVOCADO !!!!
It takes an avocado 9-10 months to grow from a flower to it's edible form. If you include the span of flower maturity ,pollination , the complete growing cycle it can take 12 to 18 months to grow an avocado from start to finish.
The avocado tree itself is a late bloomer. It has a long childhood, meaning it can take an avocado tree 10 to 15 years to bear fruit and some will not bear fruit at all. If you grow an avocado from a seed make sure it is a labour of love because your avocado might never reward your efforts with tasty toast toppings. You do not want to find yourself in a 15 year relationship yelling at the poor thing "really sam ? 15 years and not one flower, not one fruit? - wasted my life on you I am calling my mother! ".
Avocados are ancient. In fact they are one of the few surviving species from the the Cenozoic era This was the age of mammoths and other huge animals. The avocado, like most fruit bearing plants, had adapted to attract specific hosts to eat the fruit and then disperse the seeds through deification. If you look at the seed you can imagine what size of host the avocado was aiming for. The giant ground sloth was one but it seems for thousands of years the preferred host was the gomphothere.
Gomphotheres are Elephant like creatures with a huge shovel like mouth and 4 tusks. They lived 12–1.6 million years ago when they died out the avocados lost their main host but they still had allies. The mammoths and their continuing love affair with the giant land sloth kept Avocados alive. Then about 13000 to 10000 years ago most of the large mammals died out, the avocado lost its remaining hosts and technically should have not survived them by much longer; as their seeds were much too large for the surviving species they shared space with. And yet to the surprise of experts today the avocado prevailed and then found in us humans an ally that once again helped them thrive and prosper.
As mentioned before it can take up to 15 years for a tree to mature from a seed. if you are not willing to wait that long you can buy a young tree to plant instead which will bear fruit in a significantly shorter time. Avocado grafted from mature trees most commercially bought trees can bear fruit in as little as 3 years.
Avocado trees thrive in iron rich coarse and sandy soil, with low saline level. Avocado trees need sun they will survive in the shade but will not be capable of producing fruit. Make sure you plant them protected from high winds as their foliage is easily damaged by the elements.
Avocados are shallow rooted trees with most of their feeder roots at the first 15 cm. (6 inches) of soil. Because of this the soil needs to be well aerated. Fickle in nature they need specific conditions to thrive temperatures between 21-38 Celsius - 70-100 Fahrenheit anything else and they might survive but will not bear fruit.USDA zones 9b to 11 are the most likely to achieve avocado success. As true divas avocados have water preferences as well. When first planted water the tree well. New trees can hold about 7-8 Liters of water (2 gallons) Water 2-3 times a week depending upon the weather; but make sure you do not over water, just enough to keep the roots moist and not crumbly. Any more or less and fruit might not be in your future.
Select a full sun site, as previously mentioned avocados like sun. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about half a hand wider. If your tree's roots are bound loosen the soil and lightly clip the roots. Now gently ease your tree into the hole and fill back the soil. Mulching is always a good idea, spread mulch such as redwood bark or cocoa bean husks but make sure you leave an area of about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) free around the truck of the tree.
Avocados like to keep it natural like 70's porn stars, they do not like bing pruned. you can clean them up a little but if you prune to much -again no fruit no joy! Trees should be planted in spring when soil is warm and there is no more likelihood of frost.
For best results avocado trees need to be fertilised 6 times a year for the first 3 years after that 4 times a year suffices. What kind of fertiliser? If you want to go commercial go with a general citrus tree fertiliser if you want to go natural compost and coffee grounds are great. Nitrogen is the key element they need a lot of it and a dash of zinc. Because of their high need for nitrogen make sure not to plant them with other plants where they will have to compete for it. in the end - If you pamper your avocado tree there will be much fruit and joy, and we want joy right ?
