What is this life turning into? A lot of things are happening these days that make you wonder why they are happening in the first place. Teenage pregnancy is not new, but it is becoming increasingly rampant.
Just this morning, on getting to work, a girl with a five-month pregnancy showed up at school. The audacity shocked me, five months pregnant, already very obvious. A girl of just 15 years old. Even more disturbing is the fact that another teenager was responsible for the pregnancy. The boy is said to have repeated twice in school and is no longer motivated to attend classes.
What are we going to say about this? Who is to blame—the parents, society, or the internet?
Another incident involved five students moving in a group, exhibiting cult-like behaviour, and even having the audacity to post it online. They covered their faces with masks, tucked out their shirts, formed a circle like cultists, and began singing various cult-related songs in harmony.
It is not that such things have never happened before, but the boldness to record and post them online is alarming. Children nowadays fear no one and care less.
What will be the fate of the next generation when we have an influx of students misbehaving this way? What structures are in place for children when young ones and adolescents engage in heinous acts? It is only by the grace of God that one’s child may not be involved. But what happens when you train your child well, only for them to mingle with corrupt minds outside?
What are we going to do about this?
At this point, all hands must be on deck to ensure that children are properly monitored and disciplined. Now we have the issue of banning the use of the cane in secondary schools, and the government seems to have forgotten the adage, “Spare the rod and spoil the child,” which should be taken into consideration.
The government has held us to ransom and still expects students to behave well, even when they have not provided what is needed. Are we going to continue like this? What is the way forward? Are we going to survive this in the long run?
These are questions we have yet to answer.
