I think things are changing and time is changing with it. Teenagers and even young adults of this generation now believe that the friends they make on social media are better than the friends they have around them. They feel that because these people do not know their secrets, they cannot mock them or use their weaknesses against them. They find it easier to open up to someone they have never met physically than to someone they see almost every day.
The truth is that, the boy child or male in general tends to be more confident than their female counterparts. But a lot of things are changing these days. Many of these new generation adolescents and even young people now value enjoyment more than anything else. They want to enjoy life, but they are not always ready to start small or go through the process required to get there.
They want huge amounts of money and resources without necessarily wanting to work hard to get them. They want the soft life like never before. Social media has also made this worse because they are constantly seeing people showing off expensive cars, houses, travelling and living what looks like a perfect life. They see the result, but they hardly see the struggle behind it.
The kind of resilience and perseverance that the older generation endured is no longer present the way it used to be. Many young people do not want to go through difficulties for too long before seeing results. They want things to happen quickly, and when they do not, they easily become frustrated.
It is just what it is. But in this part of the world, there is also another side to it. You will see young adults who are ready to leave the country at almost any cost because they believe they have little or no chance of improving their lives here. They look around them and see corruption, unemployment, poor leadership and a system that seems to favour only a few people. So, they begin to believe that their destiny can only be fulfilled somewhere else.
Perhaps that is why migration has become such a strong desire among many young people today. It is not always because they hate their country. Sometimes, they simply want a better opportunity to live, work and become something better than what their present environment allows them to be.
