In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
Thank you to all who participated in last week's prompt : Spirit
Highlighting Abdul-qudus, with the story:
My first night made me think of not staying there at all. Whenever I try to do anything, all I can see and imagine are those scenes of us laughing and having fun together. The first night wasn't a nice one.
Curator's comment :
Nicely developed characters and good conflict and resolution.
Highlighting @universoperdido, with the story:
Recumbents are not governed by cosmic rules like the zodiacal signs, but by what they meant in life and the goals they wanted to achieve when they were beings of flesh and blood.
Curator's comment :
The story is nicely paced, well told and suitably resolved. Very readable nonfiction.
Highlighting @supernova004, with the story:
Even in situations when he was right. He mostly was always right. Growing up, I never saw him involved in fracas. He was too much of a peacemaker for my liking. Just like in a situation as this one, when he should be blowing hot and giving these assailants a taste of their own medicine, he'd rather not say anything. And it hurt me. Because keeping quiet means being guilty. It means accepting defeat. And I hated the feeling it left in my mouth. I hated him even more for letting me feel that way.
Curator's comment :
A nicely balanced, and well-structured piece, with great dialogue. One to read!
Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:
Suddenly, one of them felt a sharp pain and put his hand to his chest. They were all in the river, so they swam out to help the man, who gave a piercing and pitiful cry. As best they could, they pulled him out of the river and began to resuscitate him, but the man was unresponsive. When they were about to take him to the car to transfer him to the hospital, the man opened his eyes as if looking at a fixed point in the sky, laughed and said clearly, as if what he saw gave him great joy:
"Chilon, my friend"_ -and then, they say, he let out his last sigh.
Curator's comment :
nancybriti1 turns in an exquisite CNF story in response to the spirit prompt. A local shopkeeper, Chilon, commits suicide and the community believes his restless spirit wanders. The story is told from nancybriti1's childhood perspective. In the end, one of Chilon's friends is dying from an apparent heart attack. His last words are spoken with a smile, "Chilon, my friend". The end stays with the reader, as does the whole story.
