Jenny had trouble falling asleep that night; the day had been exhausting. There was no sound that could disturb her rest, except for the grinding of her teeth due to the aches she felt in her body, after the difficult tasks she had to face in the morning. The damp cold caressed the windowpanes of her bedroom, leaving them—nightmarishly—fogged up.
The streetlamp illuminating her residence from a corner of the porch suddenly went out, after blinking three times. However, and despite the sound before its disconnection, she continued sleeping.
Then, she half-opened her eyes, perhaps doing so upon feeling cold, or probably her mind was trying to wake her up. Her subconscious was immersed in an insistent search through the interior of a house she had never been in before. Until, unexpectedly, the unfocused silhouette of the palm of a hand pressed against the glass of the second-floor bedroom's octagonal window. At that moment, scared, she ran downstairs toward the exit door. But once outside, she fell to the clayey soil ground after tripping over her own feet. The old dwelling closed its door by itself, striking a shuddering blow against the frame, which caused a piece of dark roof tile to impact the pavement, ultimately breaking into many smaller pieces. However, she felt true fear when, despite the darkness, she could see how on the peeling-paint facade, the silhouette of a woman with crossed arms came to life.
She woke up with a start; a cold sweat ran all over her body. Her breathing was ragged as her gaze went straight to her bedroom window glass.
Seeing the sun's rays appear calmed the anguish that had flooded her at night. The new day finally returned to the same old routine. Even telling what had happened to her friend Maximiliano, while they were driving to work together, served to make her realize that it had just been a nightmare. And laughing about it, she looked out the passenger-side window. Her dark eyes came across the building from her bad dream.
Her heart skipped a beat. The feeling of déjà vu was paralyzing. Her hands grew heavy on the denim fabric of her pants, and she only managed to say:
—Stop the car.
Maximiliano fixed his gaze on her.
—Why?
Jenny slowly turned her head toward him and pointed with her index finger.
—That's the house from my nightmare.
Every detail of the dream showed itself before her in real life: the same tile pattern, the same windows, and the same silhouette of a woman with crossed arms on the facade, next to the front door.
—It looks uninhabited.
Jenny nodded at her friend's observation, but that didn't stop her bewilderment from growing.
From that day on, the old property became an obsession for her. Every night, after returning from work, she would sit in front of the computer looking for information. Until, through a local newspaper with a thirty-year-old news article, she found mention of a haunted plot of land that had never changed owners, showing photos she instantly recognized.
Determined to uncover its secrets, she decided to approach the dwelling to see if it was truly empty. It was two blocks from her house down the road, around a fenced plot where the red dirt could stain anything. She crossed, and as she drew closer, the smell of dampness and mustiness forced its way into her olfactory system until it made her sneeze.
She knocked softly twice on the door. It opened by itself, allowing her to see inside, exactly as in her dream, except that in real life, dust floated through the rays of light. She stepped inside, and the wooden floorboards creaked beneath her. Fear and expectation grew with every step. Then, she encountered an old man who, upon seeing her, said to her with a smile:
—Leticia, you've arrived.
The old man mistook Jenny for a woman from his past. He was sitting in a worn-out armchair in his living room and looked truly vulnerable there: he could barely move and looked extremely thin. She immediately took her cell phone to call emergency services, and while the ambulance was arriving, she stayed by his side to listen to him and keep him company.
—Leticia, has llegado ya.
