It was "GDD" day today - which is a Growth and Development Discussion with my supervisor, where we spent an hour or two looking at my growth path. One of the funny things to come out of it is that she thinks that I should consider my team a bit less and be a bit more selfish, as well as more loud about what I get up to. While I find it amusing that so much emphasis is put on being part of a team and working together, yet being told to go it more alone, I do get where she comes from, as a lot of what I do gets overlooked because I share recognition so it is a team effort, even if it might not be quite that way.
Be a prick.

Growth and Development. It sounds a bit like a class at high school, doesn't it? It is like having a chat with the careers counselor that I have seen in the movies, who try to direct kids to follow their aptitudes and become burger flippers. My own skills don't provide much direction, as they seem more geared toward advisory tracts, but there isn't a huge call for them. And since I am not really cut out to be a program manager apparently, I am not sure where I will move forward.
Come on crypto.
I wonder what it would be like to never have to work, but choosing to work still. I believe that it makes even shitty jobs okay to do, because there is the knowledge that it is possible to walk away at any time. The real "pain" comes when having to do a shitty job without having the option to walk away without it having negative consequences on life.
Of course, a lot of people dream about winning the lottery and telling their boss where to shove it, but I don't feel that I would be that kind of person. I reckon this is because I believe that a good life is at least partially connected to adding value to a community and one way to do that is through the work that we do - even if it is "busy work" a lot of the time.
Yet, perhaps if I was a lottery winner, I would spend some time working as I do now, until I find something where I can add more value and start doing that instead. What would that be, I don't have a clue, otherwise I might already be doing it.
I think that one of the traps of modernity is that while we might want purpose, the way life is structured through the economy, it doesn't support a healthy society. Perhaps it is impossible with so many people in such large groups, maybe it only scales as far as a small tribe, but we should try for better, right?
Be selfish.
Good advice for a career perhaps, but is it really what I want to do with my life? Do I really want to make a trade where I make gains at the expense of others? Perhaps that is not the only way of course, but over the last several decades and the continued push to individualism, that is how it has turned out. Everyone is in it for themselves, trying to extract all they can, no matter if they have to walk over others to get it. I am taking it to an extreme in my description, but it is still all about degrees.
Spiral up, spiral down.
Everything takes time and movement.
I think more and more, people are finding their place in life, and making a choice that the place is not with others, because that will force a compromise. No one wants to compromise on what they want. so people just get in the way, partners get in the way, children get in the way, community gets in the way. So the choice is being made to live a life alone, unconnected, disconnected, from the parts of us that make us human, each other.
A team.
With all the mess that is going on in the world caused by governments and corporations wanting more and more power and control of people, you'd think that we the people would at least buck the trend and stand together. Yet, we are fractals of the whole, replications that keep perpetuating the lie forward that it is impossible to work together for a better outcome than what we have. That it is impossible to do without the authorities that turn us against each other, separate, isolate and disempower us.
I think we all need a growth and development discussion.
Perhaps then we'd realize that we are far more limited without a team.
