Which anime directors do you know? The anime industry is cruel and anyone who has been watching anime for years knows that this is how it works, whether by culture or otherwise, the people behind anime are not highly valued or acclaimed in the same way as film directors or music producers are. We can talk about animation studios, these are a bit more recognized, but unless you are an animator or a true fan of a specific director, it is hard to know the name of any director beyond Satoshi Kon or Miyazaki. Two others that everyone talks about are Watanabe and Yuaasa, because their styles are extremely distinctive; one, being the director of cowboy bebop and samurai champloo, and the other being the director of devilman crybaby in that respective order. Now, remembering how good these directors are, I remembered two anime that I need to recommend that are hardly talked about in general.

Podemos hablar de estudios de animación, estos son un poco más reconocidos, pero a menos que seas un animador o un verdadero fan de un director en específico, es difícil conocer el nombre de algún director más allá de Satoshi Kon o Miyazaki. Otros dos de los que todo el mundo habla es de Watanabe y Yuaasa, porque sus estilos son sumamente característicos; uno, siendo el director de cowboy bebop y samurái champloo, y otro siendo el director de devilman crybaby en este respectivo orden. Ahora, acordándome de lo bueno que son estos directores, recordé dos animes que necesito recomendar de los que casi no se habla en general.

Childen of the apollon is a jazz and religion anime that would surprise anyone. It is a short anime that has music, love and Catholicism as main characters, which is really difficult to see in an anime, but Watanabe finds a way to perfectly convey the love and passion for music and at the same time combine it in a majestic way with religion. The jazz thing is a bit obvious, anyone who has seen the works of this director knows how fanatic he is of this musical genre, but what surprises me more is the way in which he shows so accurately the Catholic religion, and the truth is not that it is a theological study or anything like that, but to see religion represented in a well done way is for me something worthwhile.

Childen of the apollon es un anime de jazz y de religión que sorprendería a cualquiera. Es un anime corto que tiene como protagonista la música, el amor y el catolisismo, lo que es realmente difícil de ver en un anime, pero Watanabe encuentra la forma de transmitir a la perfección el amor y la pasión por la música y a su vez combinarlo de forma majestuosa con la religión. Lo del jazz es un poco obvio, quien haya visto las obras de este director sabe lo fanatico que es de este género musical, pero lo que me sorprende más es la forma en la que muestra de manera tan precisa la religión católica, y la verdad no es que sea un estudio teológico ni nada por el estilo, pero el ver representada la religión de una forma bien hecha ya es para mí algo que merece la pena.

The other anime I want to talk about is ping pong the animation. An anime that changed my life in several ways for being something as good as original and characteristic, because it is a spokon anime that not only talks about sports, but about the frustration that comes with sports, the obsession, the idea of always being the best or understanding that being always practicing does not mean that you will be the best in the world, and that there will always be someone better than you. An anime with a strange animation and drawing that was made specifically to scare away people who were watching the anime just for aesthetics and thus stay with those who were looking for a story and a development as few works have done.

El otro anime del que quiero hablar es ping pong the animation. Un anime que me cambio la vida de varias formas por ser algo tan bueno como original y característico, porque es un anime spokon que no solo habla del deporte, sino de la frustración que trae consigo el deporte, la obsesión, la idea de ser siempre el mejor o comprender que estar siempre practicando no significa que serás el mejor del mundo, y que siempre habrá alguien mejor que tú. Un anime con una animación y un dibujo extraño que se hizo específicamente para ahuyentar a las personas que estaban viendo el anime solo por estética y así quedarse con quienes buscaran una historia y un desarrollo como pocas obras lo han hecho.

Undoubtedly, these anime are two of the anime that I will always recommend and remember, of those that I even like to revisit from time to time, but this time I want to mention them more than anything to say that when an anime is in charge of a good director, it will most likely be a good anime regardless of the theme it touches. Beyond the studio or the animators (which is very important too), a good director will make the anime have a characteristic essence, and that can be seen with these two anime I mention in this post.

Sin duda, estos animes son dos de los animes que siempre voy a recomendar y a recordar, de esos que me gusta incluso revisitar cada cierto tiempo, pero esta vez quiero mencionarlos más que todo para decir que cuando un anime está a cargo de un buen director, lo más probable es que sea un buen anime sin importar el tema que toque. Más allá del estudio o de los animadores (que si es muy importante también), un buen director hará que el anime tenga una esencia característica, y eso se puede ver con estos dos animes que menciono en este post.
