Crabapple tree leafing out. Just a pretty picture to start the post off right 馃憤
East Hill Tree Farm 馃檪 one of the lovely things about Vermont.
East Hill Tree Farm is located in the Green Mountains. The farm is higher in the mountains than me and known for hardy trees/plants/shrubs so I always know what I get from him will thrive.
East Hill schedules two weekends in the spring for everyone to pick up bare root trees.
Here's the check in desk and you can see the orders pulled together behind the table. This spring I got 2 pear trees, 2 cherry trees, 2 crabapple trees, 2 black raspberry plants and 5 blueberry plants. The blueberries were 5 different varieties and the pears were also different varieties.
The cherry trees are for the front of my property near the road. I went with Montmorency cherries which are sour or pie cherries. They are known to be very cold hardy and Nicko at East Hill Tree Farm loves them for our area.
The pear trees were planted on a slope running down to the road below 2 apples trees I planted there last fall. The pears are both Ussuriensis (Siberian) type. One is Ure and the other Golden Spice. I panned out to get my favorite red maple in the picture 馃檪
There was a lone crabapple tree on the edge of the lawn. It either propogated there wildly or was planted and forgotten. I pruned it up and we planted the two new crabapples next to it. The new crabapples are both Prairie Fire.
Finally back to the garden. This is a blog about the garden, remember.
We planted two black raspberry plants and five blueberry plants in the ground - inside the garden fence but not in the raised beds. The blueberries are in the continuous run of mulch and the raspberries are the two individual patches of mulch at the top of the picture. The blueberries are Blue Gold, Blue Crop,
Blue Ray, Patriot, and Reka. The blueberries are probably 6" high and the raspberries quite small, maybe 2" tall. We drove 1 hr 45 minutes both ways to the tree farm. Then planted all the trees. Put up deer fence and rodent mesh. Mulched and watered. And finally got to the berries. By that point in the day, we were exhausted. So the photo taking was slowing down considerably 馃槄 I'll get better pictures of the berries as they grow.
Finally the star of the show...
a radish sprouting up through ground! The first plant growing in our beds. We have also planted onions and garlic. And next week we are going to start hardening the first of our indoor started seedlings.
Stay tuned. Thanks for checking out my post.
