Yesterday evening it was raining hard again, but I had hopes it would be drier today. We had an extra hour in bed due to the clocks going back, but I was still not up very early. It was looking better, so I eventually got up. I went with long sleeves as it was a bit cooler than previously.
I had already decided I would head north this time. There is a bit of a climb over the big railway bridge to get me working. The traffic is a bit noisy along there, but then it is onto the track up past Champneys. There were a few people around there walking dogs or running. As I turned onto the rough road up to the fishing lakes a van was following me. I slowed to let it past, but could probably have stayed ahead as it was going slowly through the puddles. Further on the path was totally swamped by water running off the fields. I tried to work through it, but I was going to get wet so took a detour over the field trying to keep uphill of the worst of it. I still got damp socks.
You can see where that slowed me down.
At Langford I followed the road to pick up another farm track I used on a previous half marathon. That goes over very open fields, but the wind was not too bad. I had an excited Dalmatian jump up at me, but no harm done. Then there were some horses out for a ride to work around.
The track brings me into Clifton which has some nice big houses. One had a massive horsebox on the drive. There are a few newer houses, but most down that road are at least Victorian. Some of the pubs around here are a lot older and the churches can go back to Norman times.
I do not think I have run that way from Clifton to Henlow before. The whole route has no serious hills, but I try to stay away from busy roads. To that end I took a diversion in Henlow past Champneys again. I used the station footbridge to cross the railway this time and walked up it. My legs are not feeling too bad now, but at that point I was flagging. Then it was just a jog through Arlesey to home for breakfast and a shower.
I have a few chores to do today before an early evening gig by my duo @swing47 in Hitchin. We were asked back after playing at The Angel's Share last weekend. I need some more practice before that.
Run free and stay well.
