The News

I woke up to another sea of red on coingecko@coingecko. I am not sure what drove it this time, but lots of coins were down around 20%, including $HIVE. $HBD got a bit nearer the $1 peg, but with no help from the efforts by some people here. I think it is good that $DOGE is going down. The hype around it is crazy considering it has no special qualities. I expect some will make a lot from it, but that means others will lose out.

Red charts

It seems at least one person expects Bitcoin to drop a lot more.

I do not get too worried about these price fluctuations as $HIVE is about all I have and it is all powered up, so I cannot sell quickly. I keep playing the long game. I am earning a decent amount, so I will be fine when the price goes up and when I need to sell. Even if I buy some now and again I am well ahead even with what I have sold in the past to pay for things like guitars.

Friday Followings

My search for more people for the Brit list continues. Please let me know of any your find as some are not obvious from their account metadata.

  • I found holisticmom@holisticmom who is from the Channel Island of Sark. I do not know of anyone else on those islands, but I may have to add a separate region for them on the list. This lady has a keen interest in nature and she is a musician too. UPDATE: She is now in Essex.
  • I like to see guitarists on Hive. tfranzini@tfranzini from Brazil joined Hive this year and is a great player with a nice Telecaster.
  • keys-defender@keys-defender is one of the good guys when it comes to making Hive better, but one of his scripts went a bit wrong this week and some good people got downvotes by mistake. He is trying to put it right.
  • chris-uk@chris-uk is a fellow Brit who is active in the Brits Discord as well as running the Splinter Elites guild on Splinterlands. There are a couple of spare places in the guild if anyone is interested.
  • Runners, cyclists and other active people should check out exhaust@exhaust to log what they do. It compiles some neat statistics and you can compete to top the charts. It integrates nicely with Strava.

Please make your own suggestions of cool people in the comments or your own #FollowFriday post.

The Doghouse

I am not going to highlight specific people, but I will talk about some behaviours that can get you admittance.

Self-voting is an contentious topic, but I think it is a matter of degree. If you vote is worth a couple of cents then it will not get you far and maybe you do not make much anyway. More of a concern are people with substantial votes (e.g. over a dollar) can do a lot of good voting for others, but I see some who give themselves multiple full votes each day. Some do it on overy comment they make. Even if they vote for others too I think it is selfish if more than 10% of your votes are to yourself. You can only give ten full votes each day and still have your voting power recover. You will earn from curation if you support others anyway.

I see some cases of people who can easily make $10 on a post and still self-vote. That seems wrong when others who produce great content struggle to make a dollar. Spread the love.

The other category of abuse for today is 're-wording' articles for Hive. Some may claim they make technical articles from elsewhere more easy to understand, but how much value are they really adding? A recent case was more or less re-writing each sentence of articles, but that is less work than coming up with a fresh viewpoint.

The other face of this is trying to conceal plagiarism by changing a few words. I expect there are tools to do this. It is often fairly obvious as they will use synonyms that look contrived. There are also tools to spot plagiarism, but it cannot be easy. Some people will use translation software to further conceal the original source. We need to be vigilant as this sort of thing gives Hive a bad reputation.

I have been downvoting both of these lately. I am very careful when I do this as others follow my downvote trail. If I make a mistake then I cannot reverse their votes. This is why I do not follow the trails of other people. I want control of my votes.

The End

I hope you found something useful in this post. Please support the people I mention. Give them a vote instead of me. Some of the rewards on this post will go to them anyway.

Have a great weekend and Hive five!
