Many of you could find this offensive, but there is little bit of "erotica" content in this post. Although I usually avoid to post such content but the place where I had been recently is surrounded by many such kind of erotic sculptures. How much would I have avoided to capture them? This is an old architect and beautiful art of stone carving displayed at every corner of the wall. Infact there is a masterpiece at every inch.
Recently, I visited Konark Sun Temple. It is also famous for being the cursed temple in India situated in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, is a marvel of ancient Indian architecture and sculpture. The main attraction of this temple are the impressive stone carvings. These carvings are all over the place, and you will unable to find any empty space. What more significant is that, each of the sculptures depict various intimate acts and positions. There are even some that could be quite controversial now. Homosexuality, lesbian love and even animals and human beings etc are carved out on the stones of the temple. It is so strange how people of ancient time are so liberal in India.
The Sun Temple is the finest example of Kalinga architecture. Every inch of this temple is carved with unique designs. The artistic skills of the craftsmen who built the temple amazes every visotor. The temple offers a glimpse into the cultural and religious beliefs of ancient India.
There are many candid postures depicted on the sculptures. Some of them were a bit difficult to interpret. It can be understood that society then was much liberal. Ans these sculptures are the reflection of the ancient Indian belief that intimacy is a natural and essential part of life. There could be others reasons too, but as a modeen day visitor, we only left to make various assumption on our history. India is known for its tradition and culture. The socio norms and vibrant culture always attracts many people from around the world. But not many are aware of our ancient culture which does depicts some erotic sculptures at many places. Talking erotic stuffs are still a tabboo in Indian society but if we look at ancient sculptures there were many examples that depicts many things openly. Konark Sun Temple is just one example of our ancient heritage.
