There are many creative, traditional, and fusion ways to eat and repurpose idli beyond the classic plate with sambar and coconut chutney. In many parts of the india, where the food is not originated it was eateen like a pan cake. These little rice cakes were cut into pieces, dipped in curry i e Sambhar or coconut chutney and then put into the mouth. Or, submerge idlis entirely in a bowl of hot, tangy South Indian sambar or spicy rasam so they soak up all the liquid and then have it. But I believe it should be eaten like they way people have them in their state of origin.
Idli is popular as it is easy to digest, oil free, and pairs easily with protein rich side dishes like sambar and coconut chutney
Idlis are the Souther India dish, which is prepared through the technique of steaming fermented rice and lentil batters. Like we have Italian or Chinese dishes restaurant, the South Indian restaurant are too popular across India. They serves different south Indian dishes. But in many parts , the dish is not enjoyed in their authentic way. People with spoon and forks like to deteriorate the actual eating process. This time when I travelled to South India, how they crave for this dish. So when you order Idli in restaurant, they first comes with Banana Leaf.
You heard it right, South Indian are very much fond of eating in trasitional way. Eating in banana leaf is one of the rare tradition that cannot be found in other state. South India serves food on banana leaves due to a combination of cultural tradition, health benefits, and practical sustainability. Banana leaves naturally decompose quickly after use, making them a zero-waste option compared to plastic or paper plates.
The old tradition always have something that makes even a simple dish quite tempting. The restairants have quick services, and soon items were placed on my leaf. 2 piece of Idli and 1 spoon each of different chutney. Both made up of coconut.
I was too excited finding the local cuisine in their authentic form. Eating off a banana leaf symbolizes purity, respect for guests, and harmony with nature. There is science logic associated with banana leaf which I learned during my course of meals.
When hot food is placed on a banana leaf, the heat activates natural plant compounds and antioxidants like which lightly infuse the food and offer nutritional benefits.
As I was glancing down the hall looking for locals people, and how they eat and what they eat. Hot Sambhar were poured over the Idli.
It was supposed to serve dofferently, but in local they eat the dish like this way. No spoon offered, no fork given. You just have to eat them using your hands. And thankfully, they have a wash basin with hand wash to clean ypur hand. The food was eaten by mashing and mixing Sambhar and Idli. You can add cgutney as per your taste. So i went crazy over it and soon my plate was finished. Purely a cultural delight.
I asked for more and they srve them in the same plate. The best part, you can have Sambhar and chutney as much as you want, free of charges. The hotel staff keep moving around with a 3 bowl tumbler to serve you. Eating idli with your hand lets you mash, tear, and soak the soft cake into sambar or chutney just right, giving you better control over texture and portion size. I simply enjoyed every bite of it. Just need to ensure you mix them properly.
In good faith - Peace!!
